Weight has become such an increasingly growing issue in society as the years go by. Too often in today's society, people are given labels based on their weight and it is slowly ruining the expectations of our generation. While people may think that going on about how someone is “too skinny” is okay, it may be a sensitive topic. You can give someone a compliment about how they look without using labeling words. Society has this perception that if you fall under the category of “skinny,” you’re not allowed to have body issues. People sometimes think it’s rude when skinnier people make comments about hating their body. I feel like I’m not allowed to have my own opinions about my body just because I’m “skinny.” That’s why I try to never bring up any comments about my body. I don’t want to be lashed out on just because I’m skinny and according to society, should be happy with my body. What the world needs to realize is that regardless of size, we are all human and will most likely all have body issues at some point in our lives no matter what our size.
My entire life I have been labeled as “skinny.” I grew up falling in the underweight category for kids my age. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times people have made comments about my size. I wasn’t happy with being tiny because of the constant comments I recieved from friends and family. My weight was always a topic of conversation at every family get together. For me, my biggest problem is not being able to gain weight. I have grown up all my life getting teased, saying that I look like I have an eating disorder. That’s how I knew from a very young age what an eating disorder was which when you think about it, is sickening. To this day, I still cannot reach 100 pounds. I eat so much food and yet, I still have not reached 100 pounds and I don’t know why. I’m glad I have a great metabolism but I just wish I wasn’t so tiny. My biggest body issue comes with gaining weight. Since I am petite and I pretty much stopped growing, when I do gain weight, it’s not in my muscles. All of the weight I gain goes to my stomach and my thighs. I feel like my body is disproportionate. If I was able to gain the weight in my muscles too, I would have a much healthier looking body.
One of the biggest reasons why people should never judge someone who looks skinny is because you never know the battles that the individual is facing. I know of many people who are battling eating disorders and hate hearing words like “skinny” and “small” because they get very sensitive when people comment about their weight. They may look skinny to you, but when they look in the mirror, they are not happy with their body. These comments about weight circle around their head day and night as they try to see what the world sees. It’s not that simple for them. Comments about weight, no matter what they are, can be very triggering.
Weight is a very sensitive topic to talk about. There are many women AND men who will have body issues no matter how society thinks they look. Since society is so obsessed with weight, we are constantly putting pressure on ourselves to look “perfect.” This pressure causes us to never be happy about the way we look. It's like we're being shamed for being skinny. Just because someone is skinny does not mean that they are not allowed to have body issues. If someone you think is skinny says something about how they are unhappy about their body, don’t get mad at them - support them. They are allowed to struggle with body issues too.
