If you are anything like me, then you probably own a sketchbook or ten. I am not sure how it is with every single proclaimed artist, but most that I have spoken to make use of a sketchbook. Whether it is for finer art or sketching concepts, you will find that an artist usually has a book of some kind on hand for art or doodling. Personally, I have gone through about ten or more in the past few years or so and I know I will go through more as time goes on. A sketchbook is considered to be such a fundamental tool for artists that it is hard to imagine life without one. Personally, it would be like trying to imagine an English Major without access to any sort of library.
Speaking of sketchbooks and libraries, if you are a person who enjoys both, then I have some wonderful news for you. Currently, there is a project in NY that is known simply as "The Sketchbook Project." This project is dedicated to celebrating artists from across the globe and their sketchbook by constructing a library where people can both submit sketchbooks and view them. What is so great about this project is that not only is there a medium where people can come together to view art outside the typical walls of a museum, this project is completely interactive. Anyone is able to submit a sketchbook and become part of the Sketchbook Library's collection.
The library is located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY and currently has participants from 101 countries around the globe. At this time, over 40,000 sketchbooks are a part of this large collection where anyone and everyone is able to participate. When you visit the library, you are able to come in and see all types of work from drawings, writing, calligraphy, photography, and more. Each sketchbook is a unique experience and lets you learn so much about the person who created it. It truly is a fun way to learn about the creativity and hearts of other people.
Like I mentioned previously, anyone is able to participate in this worldwide project. All you need to do is contact the library through their website and they will send you a sketchbook to mark up as you please. Everyone who participates in the project gets the same book to start off with, but it is amazing to see how each artist expresses themselves through their own artistic capabilities. No sketchbook is like another and that makes searching through them all the more interesting and fun. I hope to one day participate in "The Sketchbook Project" or, at the very least, go visit the actual library myself one day and get lost in the pages of creativity and spirit.
If you are interested in being a part of this project or learning more, feel free to visit "The Sketchbook Project" on their website.:
