I came into college hoping to meet that girl that I would click with instantly and be inseparable from for the next four years. To my surprise, that person turned out to be a guy. Having a guy best friend is definitely different from being best friends with girls, and this is what I’ve learned.
1. EVERYONE secretly thinks you’re dating.
I cannot count the number of times someone has told me or my best friend that we are going to end up together and that they wouldn't be surprised if we were secretly dating. Even my family and my closest friends are convinced we're actually a couple. I guess it's hard to believe that a guy and girl can really be just friends.
2. No one understands your relationship.
I don't know if it's just us, but my guy best friend and I have the weirdest relationship ever. I can't explain it, but we are unnaturally close. Like, when I say we know too much about each other, we really do. No one understands how and why we are so close, and honestly, I don't really get it either.
3. You become used to people asking you where the other one is.
Whenever I go to one of my best friend's fraternity gatherings, and he's not there, at least five people will ask me where he is. YES, we are best friends, but NO, we are not (always) attached at the hip and aware of each other’s whereabouts 24/7. So when we unexpectedly see each other, you can be sure it is a big deal.
4. You always have a back-up date.
Being a part of Greek life, there are lots of date parties and formals. Figuring out who to ask to be your date can be stressful and annoying. When your best friend is a guy, you know you always have a guaranteed, no-stress date or someone to set you up with his friends.
5. Your #MCMs must get the stamp of approval.
Your guy best friend is there for you when you find a new boy-interest and will decode all texts and interactions to tell you like it is and vice versa. And when things start to look serious, you know their approval is a must-have.
6. You learn to appreciate your girls.
Don't get me wrong, I love my guy best friend, but there are some stark differences between the way girls and guys perceive the same situations. It's in times like these where I feel thankful to have both to give me advice, and I realize my love for my girls too.
