Whether you're a freshman or senior, there's really nothing like going home for more than a weekend. But when it comes to summer, it can be a very bittersweet three months.
1. Sleeping in your own bed.
Finally, after two weeks of stressing over finals while simultaneously packing to move home for three months, you are able to sleep in your bed, in your room. Sure the bed you have at college may be comfortable and sure you can make it to be your own, but there is nothing like the bed you have at home.
2. Moving home an entire month before everyone else gets out of school.
If you’re like me and you have younger siblings, then you probably know how wonderful it is to have some time when you don’t have to share the TV or when there isn’t someone waking you up in the morning.
3. Having little responsibility while your parents are at work.
At this point, you’ve definitely pulled countless all-nighters, so who cares when you wake up? There’s no one there reminding you to unload the dishwasher or to not watch another season of Grey’s Anatomy.
4. After a few weeks, work begins to take over.
You begin to ask yourself how and when you became such an adult and even have a hard time remembering the last time you had a summer with no responsibilities. Sometimes, you even expect a “Welcome to Adulthood” banner waiting for you at work.
5. Not seeing your best friends for too long.
You start planning mini-vacations with friends from different states in one place for most of the year, it’s hard to picture them so far away when you do move out. So, to cure the void of late night pizza runs, you plan a trip to visit them. This is what summer is about right? The relief when you think you have finally found the balance between adulthood and still being an adolescent.
6. When August rolls around and you’re in shock.
At this point, you realize that you haven’t managed to save any money and that you can’t believe that in three short weeks your destined to begin a new year and have double the responsibility. After this, you begin to focus on the fact that you got a little too comfortable in your room at home and the packing and cleaning are going to begin taking over your life.
At the end of it all, the ups and downs of the longing for summer vacation always seem to end on a high point when you get to count down the hours until you get to see your friends and roommate once again.
