How Siblings Can Be Different And Still Get Along
Jessica Petty

My brother can be my best friend or he can be the biggest pain in my butt, the reason is because you and your siblings are different. I am going to compare me to my brother. I am going to talk about our personalities, our likes and dislikes and even our dreams.

First off, my brother is very talented in a variety of areas. He is very competitive, easy to anger and is very sentimental. My brother is very smart and gets the opportunity to be in all upper level classes. I am extremely jealous that he can just go to class, listen to the teacher lecture, come home do the assignment once and not have to study before the test.

He gets to claim first place in his swimming career. I believe he will become an Olympian someday. When it comes to sports, my brother is after that gold medal. If he doesn’t, the race was a failure, even if he gets a best time.

Since my brother is super competitive, he is easy to anger and becomes very aggressive. When my brother and I both need the computer to accomplish our homework, my brother will often tell me it is his turn by trying to shove me off the chair and onto the floor, but I am three years older and hold my ground. That being said, the quality I like the most about my brother is his ability to have empathy. I also have this quality and it is one thing we share. I love hearing my brother talk about how he helped one of his peers, because I believe he inherited that trait from me.

While we share our ability to feel the pain of others, I am very different from my baby brother. While my brother is very competitive, I swim because I enjoy the sport, but I don’t care about what place I get. But I do care about my work quality, and unlike my brother I have to work exceptionally hard to get there. I study for thirty minutes a night to get the same grade as my brother. Unlike my brother, I am very hard to anger. I am capable of letting things go, and not being super offended by what people say, and I try to believe them, but if I know they said something to be mean to me or someone else, then watch out because I become the Wicked Witch of the West.

Secondly, we like to eat different foods, and we were born in different places. My brother’s favorite two foods on the planet are chili and lasagna, but my least favorite two foods are chili and lasagna. I think the kitchen smells like it has piles of filthy socks, and I think it taste even worse, but whenever my mom serves it, I always choke it down. The weird thing is those seem to be the only two foods my brother really loves to eat, he will eat pasta, pizza, soups and other foods, but when my mom serves one of those two foods his whole face lights up like a three year old child opening a Christmas present.

I love all kinds of food, but I have four dishes that I would consider my favorite. One of these dishes has to be salmon, I love the crisp edges of the pink fish, I love the texture it leaves after it melted in my mouth. Second I love steak or chicken tacos, for several reasons, one being that I was born in the Southern part of America, so I kind of have to, but I also love the hot spicy taste it leaves behind, my brother doesn’t understand how I can enjoy the taste, but I love it. My next dish is a pasta dish my mom grills some chicken, makes some homemade pasta, and puts whatever fresh vegetables we have in with it with her famous homemade creamy peanut butter sauce. I crave each bite, but my brother thinks the dish is heavy and disgusting! I also love my mom’s homemade pancakes, I mean what is not to like. My brother will eat pancakes, but whenever we do he always complains he wants French toast, another food I don’t care for.

One thing my brother and I can agree on is what the best restaurant in town is Blue Orchid, a Thai restaurant. That being said, my brother and I enjoy different dishes. My brother and I also have a different meal we feel makes us perform to our very best on swim meet days. I think scrambled eggs with two pieces of cinnamon bread is perfect, but my brother wants French Toast with peanut butter on top, and what’s french toast without Maple Syrup! Another thing that makes my brother and I different is I could spend an entire day sampling different foods and would truly enjoy it, but my brother doesn’t enjoy eating, so for him that would be a big deal.

Finally, I am going to tell you about how my brother’s plan for the rest of his life varies from mine. Fortunately, neither of us plan on living in our parents' basement forever. My brother's dream is to become a biomedical engineer. I think he would be perfect for the job. I know you have to be very intelligent, be able to work the speed of light, and not be afraid to step on a few people’s toes to get to the product first.

I don’t have any desire to be a biomedical engineer, but I want to try to be a pediatric brain doctor, I think it would be very cool to get to save young kids every day. Maybe my brother would be the one to find the cure and we would go down in history together. I want to make it clear I do love my brother, but we are two very different individuals that fit very well in our family.

In conclusion, my brother and I have very different personalities, our unique likes and dislikes and finally our plans after college vary, but we may come back and reunite as one! I think my brother is a very special person, just like me, even though we don’t see eye-to-eye on everything.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
