On September 5th, Sia released her latest music video for her single "The Greatest" featuring Kedrick Lamar. Directed by Sia herself and Daniel Askill, with choreography by Ryan Heffington, the video, according to multiple sources, is a tribute piece to the tragic Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando.
The video stars "Dance Moms" alum, Maddie Ziegler, who has become the "face" of Sia. Ziegler, who has also starred in Sia's other videos such as "Chandelier" and "Elastic Heart", is once again donning that famous wig, but this time in black, to join 48 other talented performers.
Sia is famous for creating powerful and mysterious music videos, sometimes with very abstract meanings attached to them. "The Greatest" is yet another example of Sia's genius, and shows the bizarre and eccentric sides of this singer.
While the actual message of the video is ambiguous, several things were noted that make the message pretty clear. There are 49 dancers on screen, performing with Maddie Ziegler who has two rainbows streaked across her face. At the end of the video, the dancers collapse in a pile of what seems to be a nightclub, with a wall covered in bullets behind them.
"I think it has a lot of powerful imagery and hits a very painful cord in me. Sia created a beautiful tribute from a very horrible and heartbreaking tragedy," says Liam Datwani, an Advertising student at Penn State.
With an astonishing 30 million views with its recent release, "The Greatest" has become a powerful, but somber piece that honors the victims of that tragic shooting that took place in Pulse Nightclub in June.
