One of Netflix’s latest ideas to boost their subscription numbers is including themselves with the Latino(a) population of the United States. Even though you might not be Latino(a), and/or you may not know Spanish, these shows are bound to captivate you anyways … And if you feel completely lost, you can just put on the subtitles (I do it too LOL).
Some suggestions I have watched and I am completely obsessed with are:
1. "Velvet"
"Velve"t is a show taking time/place in Madrid, Spain in the 60’s. It is the story of the owners and workers of the Velvet galleries which are sort of like a Sack’s Fifth Avenue, but mostly of an in-house designer that they hire themselves for the store. It’s a “rosy” love story where everyone is in love with everyone and there’s always new drama arising.
2. "The Time In Between"
"The Time In Between" is my favorite out of all of the suggestions I will give you here today. It takes time/place in Madrid, Tangier, and Tetouán just before the Civil War breaks out in Spain. I can’t tell you exactly anything that happens in the show because it develops so quickly you just have to watch it and see. The worse part about this show is that it’s only one season and then it’s done; but it is definitely worth it! Once you start it, you won’t be able to stop.
3. "The Grand Hotel"
"The Grand Hotel" takes time/place in Spain as well, but during the 1910’s. It begins as search for the missing sister of a dreamy, young, completely gorgeous Spanish man called Julio. However, that lasts about three episodes and that’s when the show actually begins. Sometimes it might get a little slow, but it’s worth it to know what it will turn out in the end. This show has just recently ended as well but has enough episodes to keep you entertained for enough time!
4. "Pablo Escobar: El Patrón Del Mal"
No, I don’t mean "Narcos" … First of all, "Pablo Escobar" is with REAL Colombians playing the part and is actually recorded in Colombia where Pablo Escobar had his reign. It’s all based on Pablo Escobar’s point of view from the first time he ever cheated on a test, until the end of his life. While it is very historically accurate, there are some names that the show decided to change. If you liked "Narcos," and you start watching this, you’ll regret ever saying you liked "Narcos."
