As a high school senior, applying to college can be stressful, scary, and overwhelming. The thought of leaving the friends and peers you have attended school with for the past four or maybe even 13 years is terrifying. If you're an outgoing person, then meeting new people from various places around the world may not be so scary.
Most graduated seniors end up going to the same university as their classmates they just graduated with. Some are probably rooming with their close friends. You've heard it said before, "You shouldn't room with your best friend." A lot of people believe that rooming with a good friend never ends well. You end up hating each other and can't stand to be around one another. Well, I'm here to tell you that the saying is something you should really consider.
When I started college, I had my best friend since the first day of kindergarten by my side. We were rooming and were going to take on the first year of college together. We went to football games together, went to the cafeteria together, and went out together; we even made the same friends together. We did almost everything together. Everything was fine and dandy. College was really fun and I enjoyed meeting new people and making new memories. Unfortunately, at the end of the first semester, she decided to transfer to a different university. I was happy for her but I was a little nervous about going back to school without her there. I had lots of new friends, but it was just the thought of not having that one person you could always count on being there for you.
In the end, her transferring was a blessing in disguise. Once she had left, I had to force myself to get out of my comfort zone and make new friends that I could count on. Once the second semester began, I became closer with the girls on my hall. They ended up being the best group of girls and guys anyone could ever possibly wish for.
The point is that if you're rooming with that one person or best friend, you're going to end up doing everything together. Yes, it may be scary to room with a random person, but it will give you that little extra motivation to go out and meet new people and create friendships that will last a lifetime. If my roommate hadn't transferred, I would not have made the bonds and friendships I have today with the people I can count on because I would not have gotten out of my comfort zone.
