Yes, America, it is time for another Stephen King attempt from the magical world of directing yet again! This time we're recreating King's novel/ 2007 film adaption of 'The Mist'. Although all of the adaptions are different, the concept is basically the same; Lord of the Flies meets small-town horror. Here's what you need to know about the latest television adaption of 'The Mist'.
Promotion for this series was not the prominent in my area. I had stumbled upon a commercial for the series on youtube and was intrigued, thinking in regards to the previous successful adaptions of King's works. Sadly, just like most cases with advertising, my hopes were not fully met. I found the characters to be somewhat dull and unappealing. Sure, there were serious real-life issues such as vicious cases of infidelity and sexual assault, but it didn't have the soap opera spark that shows such as Law and Order SVU or Degrassi have that has viewers clinging for answers. However, the plot is actually the entire reason why I kept at close distance with this show.
While most shows kind of stray away from it, 'The Mist' directly questions the conflict of religion vs religion during doomsday. There is an elderly woman who basically worships the mist and nurtures spiders but she chose the wrong place to reside during the mist invasion; a church. Obviously, conflict and moral dilemma ensue in result amongst the churchgoers.
Across town, there is a small mall and they are going through their own mini version of World War 3 and ganging up on each other over food and petty gossip. Which is pretty pathetic because this season is actually spread over a rather short amount of time. They're basically sacrificing each other when it's been like two weeks or less. There is also a conflict of interest between one of the main characters being locked in this forsaken mall with the man who supposedly raped her at a high school kickback. Sadly, she ends up romantically chasing after him seeming completely oblivious to this, leaving us viewers like:
Also, there's a monster that likes to eat little kids' faces. More like suck them off. You wouldn't think it would go there. But yeah it does. I feel like when they were trying to pitch this idea in their concept meetings they would get the same reaction as the GIF above. Maybe they thought they got lost on the way to an American Horror Story crew meeting.
Overall, this show has good plot but it's not extraordinary. It's one of those shows you will pick up and then eventually forget about then come to think about it on a dark, boring day. The season ended on a neutral note; government possibly controlling and attempting to control the mist and many, many character deaths I had been asking for. On the other hand, that's pretty much how majority of science pieces work; *gasp* it was the government or the aliens amongst us the entire time. So if the series had to die here, it would leave room for creativity in the minds of the tiny fandom.
I'm curious to see if this show will be renewed for another season and if so how the plot will change since a lot of people died meaning the conflict went to the grave with it. I'm not for or against a season two but I am willing to see what will happen with 'The Mist' in the future.
