All over social media, I've been seeing articles written by women who dropped their sororities and claimed that joining one was the worst decision of their college careers.
Whether it was due to "hazing", not vibe-ing with the girls, or just not enjoying the stereotype – they dropped and hold back no words of judgement towards Greek life.
So here I am to tell you why joining a sorority was the best decision I have made thus far.
1. My family.
No, I'm not talking about the sorority in it's whole (although they're pretty bomb). I'm talking about my twin, my big, and g-big. We're one happy little family and honestly are one of the best parts of being in a sorority.
2. Philanthropy.
Greek life actually puts in around 1million hours of community service each academic year. 1 MILLION HOURS.
3. Being held to a higher standard.
My sorority (and many others) have high standards for us. They encourage us to thrive academically and meet a certain GPA. We're required to attend philanthropy events and participate in other organizations on campus.
4. Confidence.
Joining a Greek Life gives you so much more than just friends, it gives you confidence. Your sisters encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and support you through challenges.
5. You always have something to do.
Whether it's a philanthropy event, chapter, hanging out at the house with your sisters, or going out with them – you always have the option to go out and do something.
6. Connections.
With alumni chapters and lifetime membership, college girls are given the opportunity to make connections through their sororities to get jobs after graduation. Many sororities also offer internships and scholarships.
7. You meet some of your best friends.
I had a very rough start to college friend-wise. Some of the girls who I had thought would be my bridesmaids turned out to be anything but. After joining my sorority though, I met girls who I can't imagine a life without them.
So, whatever your opinions, give Greek Life a shot. If it's not for you, that's OKAY – at least you tried it. But don't bash on the girls who ended up thriving in it.
