You know the feeling you get when he says "I love you" for the first time? What about the security and comfort you feel when he wraps his arms around you and promises to never let go? And don’t you just love the feeling you get when she kisses you on the forehead or holds your hand in the car while your favorite country song plays? Well, the love of God is so much better than that. Before you stop reading I want you to know that this isn’t just another article to drill bible verses into your head or to shame you for whatever sins you may have committed in the past. This is simply a letter warning you that you are looking for love in all the wrong places.
What would you say if I told you that God loves you endlessly and sees you as a treasure? Many of us complain that we are lonely or “unlucky in love,” but what we don’t realize is that the greatest love of our life is constantly begging for our attention. God may be almighty and powerful, but he still yearns for a relationship with you, yes you. “The wildest part is that Jesus doesn’t have to love us. His being is utterly complete and perfect, apart from humanity. He doesn’t need me or you. Yet He wants us, even considers us His inheritance” (Eph. 1:18).
Although we may not admit it, many of us fear a relationship with God because we believe our sins are too heavy of a burden to be forgiven. However, this is not true. God loves us regardless of our past mistakes. We should not be ashamed of what lies in our past because that does not matter to God. He sent Jesus to die on the cross so that sinners like you and I could be saved and live a life full of God’s wonderful mercy without guilt. “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
Another reason we may neglect our relationship with God is because we believe that the world revolves around us. This may sound harsh, but it’s true, and I will be the first to admit that I am guilty of living this way. We are constantly thinking about what our future will look like or how we will be successful on day. We are always worried about the way we look, and the way people view us. When our lives are going well we forget to thank God for all of our fortune and when our lives are less than ideal we selfishly ask “why me?” In our heads we live in our own world, when in reality we are living in His. God created you and I and everything on this earth, so our lives should be devoted to serving him. “The point of your life is to point to him. Whatever you are doing, God wants to be glorified, because this whole thing is His. It is His movie, His world, His gift.”
My advice to you is to let go of all the problems in your life, all of your worry and doubt, and surrender to God. You may not be religious, and you may think the idea of an all-powerful being is unfathomable, but I’m just asking you to give it a shot. I can tell you from experience that a life with the Lord is much more fulfilling than one without. No matter what point in your life you are at right now, whether it be good or bad, the love and support of God will make it so much better. And please don’t blame God for the trials and tribulations of your life, they are only a part of his plan for you. Never compare your circumstances with that of your neighbor, because God has a different plan for each and every one of us. Some of our paths may be bumpier than others, but the path of the Lord always leads to the same unconditional love, joy, and comfort. “Trust in the lord with all your heart. Do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
