Are soul mates biblical?

Should Christians Believe In Soul Mates?
Not On the High Street

Why do you even believe in soul mates? Seriously, why? Because everyone else does? Because society tells you that there is the perfect person out there for you? Because you believe in soul mate? Maybe you even know a couple that you would dub as soul mates. The definition of a soul mate comes in many forms; as someone who completes you, someone you are destined to be with, the perfect person for you... Christianity's ideals of marriage and relationships can seem to hold similar grounds, considering there is a pressure in such communities to get married, get married once, and stay married. But after giving some thought to freewill, I don't think that God has given us such things as a "soul mate." After doing some research, I discovered that soul mates, despite the seemingly common Adam and Eve argument, are not biblical.

In evidence of God's creation of soul mates people often look to the creation of Adam and Eve. God saw that it was not good for man to be alone, so He gave Adam Eve. Two people meant to be together, but also the only two people on Earth at the time. As you examine relationships in the bible, you quickly see that God never says or created someone for another person in terms of romantic relationships (outside of Adam and Eve). Men have multiple wives, were single, or decided that by taking a woman as his wife, it would be beneficial or because he loved her. Never is a soul connection mentioned until they are married and become one. On top of that, in our culture, the concept of a soul mate seems centered on what you can get from someone else, not what you can give. Not the focus Jesus had.

Which leads to an interesting argument. Several married couples have blatantly said, "My spouse is not my soul mate, but I love them all the same." Instead of arguing for "soul mates" they argue for a "sole mate." Meaning, I have one spouse and even when the relationship gets tough and divorce seems right, I will stay with you.For me, the message of choosing someone is a lot stronger than being with someone because it was meant to happen. Almost implying that it has to happen. But God is all about free will. God has never made us do anything. Even when there was no sin, we still had the option of choosing not to be with God. The Tree of Knowledge was not hidden from us, it was not kept from us. It was there for us to choose just as easily as it was to choose God. So why would someone who values free will so much, assign us someone we had to be with? It clashes with his character. Not to mention, Paul argues that it is better for us to remain single. Therefore, we can better serve God. Biblical evidence against the concept of "soul mates."

God calls us to be whole in Him. The idea of soul mates come from a Greek story where all people were once 4 arms, 4 legs, and two heads. Zuses threw lighting bolts down and separated us into halves. Now we a cursed to roam the earth searching for the one who makes us whole, who is our better half. I am not an incomplete person. I am my own whole being, just as God created me to be, and I am whole through Him.

If I get married it will be because I choose that person over everyone else and that person choose me over everyone else, and we are willing to fight for us, all the way. Not because we were destined to be together. I may not believe in "soul mates," but I can definitely buy into the concept of a "sole mate."

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
