It’s that time of year again -- award season. The Golden Globes were a hit, and Oscar nominations were just released. However, another list of nominees was announced recently for an award show that’s slightly less traditional: The Shorty Awards. In case you are not familiar with The Shorty Awards, it is an award show for all of your favorite online and social media stars. The names of these nominees may not be as recognizable as those of the Oscars, but that doesn’t mean these people are any less influential. Let’s get to know some of the nominees!
Nominated for Best Dancer: Dominic Sandoval
Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval may be nominated for Best Dancer, but he is truly a jack of all trades. He started his career on "So You Think You Can Dance,"moved his way to "America's Best Dance Crew," and soon found himself on YouTube. Nominated for Best YouTube Comedian: Ryan Higa
Ryan Higa is not your average comedian. His content is witty, hilarious and overall genius. If you are looking to watch something comedic on television, turn whatever you are watching off and open your computer so you can search for Ryan’s channel. Ryan and his crew specialize in sketches, but they make all kinds of videos. Ryan and his crew are so entertaining that even videos of them opening up mail are sure to make you laugh. If magic were real, Kandee Johnson would be a wizard with her makeup skills. Kandee can transform herself into anything or anyone simply by putting on makeup. Her transformations are simply incredible, and you can watch them for hours. Kandee has made herself into celebrities, fictional characters and many more. Tyler Oakley is said by many to be “The King of YouTube,” and this title is most fitting. Tyler started his channel so he could talk to his friends and family back home while he was in college, and since, he has created quite the following. Millions (seven to be exact) have subscribed to Oakley to see content as soon as he posts it. Oakley did not let the popularity go to his head and instead, used his fanbase for good. Each year, Tyler Oakley does a fundraiser to raise money for the Trevor Project, and he has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the cause.
