As a college student, I often find myself feeling trapped within the confines of my university longing to get off-campus, explore new places, and take tons of pictures. Whenever you do not feel like being stuck on campus all weekend, all you need is a car, a couple of your closest friends, a backpack filled with essentials, pillows, and blankets. Here is a list of insanely beautiful places that only require a short drive from LA:
Joshua Tree National Park
Travel Time: 2.5 - 3 Hours (130 miles)
Not only is the scenery at Joshua Tree beautiful, but the drive there is filled with uniquely shaped trees and rocky expansions that has been there for millions of years. Take stunning photos while you hike the day away and as the sun sets, take a rest while enjoying the luminous rocks and trees. If you are more on the adventurous side, spend the night and take time to enjoy the skies and the glimmering stars.
Catalina Island
Travel Time: 40 minutes (25 miles) plus a one hour boat ride
Catalina Island is a great place to unwind and relax for a weekend. There are many opportunities to do water sports such as, kayaking and snorkeling. There are also great land activities such as biking around the island. This island is truly a perfect getaway.
Solvang
Travel Time: 2.5 - 3 Hours (147 miles)
A small Danish village tucked away in a small corner in California. This town is a recreation of an Alpine village and filled with traditional shops and pastries. You will feel like you are in Europe experiencing a completely different culture.
The Salton Sea
Travel Time: 2.5 - 3 Hours (154 miles)
Located in the San Andreas fault, this body of water is the largest body of water in California and it was accidentally created in the early 1900s. The best thing to do at this lake is pack a picnic, take a walk along the shores and look at the really different and interesting angles you can see the lake from.
Hearst Castle
Travel Time: 4 - 4.5 Hours (249 miles)
Hearst Castle is a place filled with beautiful architecture and interesting history. Located right in-between Los Angeles and San Francisco, this castle can be visited on special occasion or on the way to either one of the cities mentioned.
