We've all seen the hashtag, right? Short hair don't care. Some of the bravest souls are chopping off their lovely locks to take on a more edgy and stylish look. Girls that have been saving their hair as it grows all the way down their backs will easily chop it off and not shed a single tear. The problem is, there shouldn't BE a "short hair don't care" subject. Women shouldn't have to care or not if their hair is short, but it's something many people just aren't willing to deal with.
It's a popular opinion that longer hair is more attractive on women. Why is that? Some think that longer hair is what makes a woman. It shows their femininity and their health because they've let their hair grow for years and years like a proud lion's mane. Men feel that if a woman has short hair it will make them seem as though they think they can do as they please. To find out what the general opinion was I asked a few men how they felt about long hair and the answers didn't necessarily surprise me:
"You'll look like a d*ke."
"I just don't really like girls with short hair."
"Do people still care about that?"
Asking a few others yielded the same general answers. They all believe that with short hair a woman takes on a more masculine look. I inquired how they felt about women like Halle Berry or Anne Hathaway who have sported the most amazing pixie cuts, and I still received the same exact answer. Even if a girl is famous, gorgeous, and has the type of body everyone craves, they still won't be enough to pull off short hair.
In the 21st century it seems illogical for people to still believe in the wrongs of short hair. But what's so wrong with it? Girls that cut their long hair off so they can sport a cute and summery bob seem to have more style. It's different than the same old long, straight hair that seems to adorn every single head in this country. Instead of taking the road of having healthy and cute hair, many girls are pressured into believing that it's better to have scraggly, dead hair with as many split ends as a corpse. They've been told by their friends and by men that they'll look bad or they won't get a boyfriend if they have short hair.
Short hair is all around healthier for women and, frankly, much easier to style. For girls that have extremely thick hair it ends up making it seem thinner and easier to deal with. For every poor soul, like myself, that lives in an extremely hot state, they can manage their hair without having to put it up every day or sweat their faces off because their 'do is too much for the weather. Instead of taking 30 minutes in the morning to get ready, you may only take 10. Short hair has so many benefits that people can't understand or aren't willing to. Short hair is the future! It should be embraced!
I think that the dynamic on short hair needs to change. My unpopular opinion doesn't need to stay that way. People's haircut shouldn't define who they are. Women shouldn't be crying over the loss of inches of hair just because they feel they won't be pretty anymore. Men shouldn't have to feel like a woman has turned masculine just because she doesn't have long locks. All of these stereotypes regarding the length of hair are ridiculous. It's wrong that a woman should be shamed because of her hair. No matter what size, shape, color, or texture hair is, it's just hair. It's not even living! Why be so attracted to something, when it's dead?
