9 Things I Will Miss About Ship Homecoming

Ship will always have a special place in my heart, but homecoming as a student brings out true school spirit.

Ok first I'm prefacing this list with the fact I will come back as an alumni, but this is about the things I will miss as a current student. I will still be able to enjoy tailgating and the game as an alumni, but there are just some events I will miss out on.

1. The Pep Rally

Is anything better than freezing your butt off on the metal bleachers of the stadium, while listening to pep-talks? I mean if nothing else it's worth going for the chance to win prizes, getting a free t-shirt, and watching the dance performances. So bring a blanket and enjoy this event while you can.

2. Crate/Case Race

I don't know how this became a staple for things to do in Ship, but it is. What better way to celebrate football than with a race to see which team can finish their alcohol first? Let's be honest, no one ever actually wins though because someone on the team either throws up or hides their alcohol. Just remember kids: bring some water and snacks so you don't die.

3. Battle of Campus

I never got to participate in this, but to completely honest I'd rather watch. Nothing is better than walking through campus and seeing an event going on, especially since they are events similar to field day events from elementary school. 10/10 would recommend watching them, you'll either start cheering on a team or be entertained either way you win.

4. Trivia Night

The fun homecoming event that is based on the theme for homecoming. The night where your knowledge is tested, but if you succeed you win prizes. So will you feel like the smartest man alive, or the dumbest? Oh and I'm still upset this is not a thing my last year, like you couldn't test us on Ship's history?

5. Homecoming Lip Sync

Awe the highlight of homecoming week festivities, well before the game and tailgating. Where groups put on a show, and for Greeks it's practice for Greek Week. This may be the worse thing to have to give up when I transfer to an alumni.

6. Weeklong Drinking

When you're a student you drink from Wednesday onward, and have to apologize for your actions in advance, but hey, it's all in good fun. Once you're an alumni though the weekend is your only fun time, and you struggle to have more than just the Saturday free. I'm really going to miss this week when I graduate because it's one of those weeks where everyone just has fun.

7. Sleeping in Your Own Bed (or a hook-up's)/

The best part of being a student is you definitely have somewhere to stay because you have to live near by, and if you go home with someone they will have a place nearby, too. Once you graduate though it's all about finding a hotel or finding someone to stay with.

8. The T-shirts

Whether you get the free shirt at the Pep-rally or you are in an organization that gets homecoming shirt, nothing is better than rocking those new shirts. Honestly, it's one of my favorite parts of homecoming hands down.

9. Red Raider Pride

I'm not saying I won't have pride when I become an alumnae, and Ship will always have a special place in my heart, but there is something about being a student that truly brings out the Ship pride. For example what if I go to Grad school at a university who plays against Ship, who do I cheer on? So I will enjoy this homecoming and hearing RED RAIDERS boom throughout the stadium, hearing the band play, and watching the crowd go insane for a touchdown.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
