How Feminism has taken a Beating this Election

A Sexist America

The troubles that have been going on this Election period could fill a whole dumpster after Christmas except the dumpster wouldn’t be consistent of cute sparkly snowmen and Santa Claus wrapping paper that your mom spent too much time and money on just to be ripped apart and thrown away.

And I swear I might have a vicious throw up session if I have to type the words ‘this election’ one more time, but as much as I want to be done writing about the political status of our country, there is a matter that needs attention that is starting to get out of control.

The matter is the fall of respect and rights for women.

I can’t even utter the words that Trump spoke towards women earlier this fall, and I am sure if you as a reader can’t think of the obvious you have surely heard some horrendously disrespectful attacks he has made about women, but either way he has joked about sexual assault and has been disrespectful towards women on many occasions.

There is no way around that. And it isn’t okay. I don’t want to accept the fact that instead of getting to have our first female president, without looking at it politically, instead America has someone who thinks it’s okay to joke about sexual assault.

It baffles me that women are still oppressed and considered objectively, and I feel as though Trump’s presidency will not only take away women’s reproductive rights concerning his pro-life plans, but it could also open the door to men who think it is okay to make sexist remarks.

By him wanting to make abortion illegal it could eventually lead to scarceness of contraceptives such as birth control and IUDs if Planned Parenthood is shut down.

I do not want to get into a full-fledged discussion about abortion because that is a sensitive subject, but many fear that Trump is either not understanding the full effect of his pro-life actions or is willingly aware that defunding Planned Parenthood will collapse a whole system of contraceptives that the company provides for women on top of providing the possibility of abortions. He could try to get rid of the funding just for abortions yet he isn’t.

I have recently been around a young man in his early 20s who kept jokingly calling his wife ‘woman’ and while I don’t think it was associated completely with our president-elect it still concerns me that men are starting to feel like they can make sexist remarks.

It is incredibly offensive, and I fear that we have made a statement to America that we are okay with women being objectified and subjected to assault by letting Trump get away with his sleazy attitude towards women.

This *gags* election has shown me that we need to take feminism more seriously. I don’t know if society as a whole has moved backwards or if it’s just personal but I feel like women got a little break from worrying about strong misogynistic figures and things were really starting to move forward for us.

I haven’t felt this threatened by sexism since I was a little insecure freshman in high school watching a feminist documentary called Miss Representation for the first time and realizing how wrong things have been. Now more than ever we need to stand up to even the smallest indications of sexism because even the smallest seed can grow into an overpowering force.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
