The stress of finals can be very overwhelming, and even though you have seemingly no free time, it is important to take a quick study break (or two) in order to avoid mental exhaustion and/or breakdown. Here are a few things you can do to de-stress during the most stressful week of the quarter:
1. Work out
Even if you can only set aside 20 or 30 minutes, going on a run and getting your heart rate up can make a huge difference. Working out, as we have heard time and again, boosts your mood, combats anxiety, and clears your mind. After heading to the gym, jogging around campus, or even simply doing ab exercises in your room, you will continue studying with a more positive and focused attitude.
2. Watch an episode of your favorite TV show
Watching a funny show is just the study break some of us need to fight the boredom that comes with endless hours of studying. Be careful, though. We all know Netflix can trick us into hitting "next episode" way too many times.
3. Take a shower
The feeling of warm running water on your skin is extremely soothing. If you're afraid that the warmth will make you sleepy, take a cold shower to wake yourself up. Regardless of the temperature, taking a shower can make you much more productive when you get back to studying.
4. Call your parents
I know we're "adults" or whatever, but talking to your mom or dad on the phone will surely help calm your nerves. Whether you talk about your finals or chat about some other subject to distract yourself from the stress for a little bit, hearing the voice of your biggest supporters is always reassuring.
5. Breathe deeply
Even if you're not into meditating, taking a few slow, deep breaths will help you relax.
6. Listen to music
Some people are able to study with music as an aid, but if you're like me, music can be a distraction when you're trying to focus. If the latter is the case, take a 10-minute break and listen to your favorite song (or songs). This is guaranteed to fill your brain with positive neurochemicals, such as dopamine.
7. Eat a snack (in moderation)
I know we are always told that stress-eating is bad, but if you are feeling hungry as you study, you need to fill your body with energy. Eat a healthy snack that will fill you up, such as a handful of almonds, a hard-boiled egg, or an apple. Don't eat your snack mindlessly, though. Take a step away from your laptop or textbook, and sit some place peaceful.
