Starting Your New Year with Old Friends

With the start of another year, it’s always great to reflect on the past year and what you want to make even better about this year. Goals to achieve, trips to plan, new hobbies you want to try and the fabulous new you that’s going to shine. One thing that’s easy to forget in the excitement for all the amazing new things you want to do, is the people who were there by your side at your best and worst times. Don’t forget to let them know how much you appreciate them being there. While I tell my family how much I love them and thank them for being there all the time, I need to remind my friends why I’m so thankful for them.

1. You’re thankful she’s been with you through it all.

Let’s face it. No matter how hard you try, you’re always going to have a bad day, or even a bad week. Stress can get the best of you, and sometimes you’ll just want to stay home in your yogas, eat brownies and complain at how you were wronged, life’s unfair, and nobody gets you. Except her. She sat there through it all, agreed with even your most ridiculous viewpoints, and even gave you a pep talk afterwards. Let’s face it. That takes real effort. At the same time she’s someone you can count on for a fun night out, a much needed girls’ night in, and always tries to be there for those important events in your life. It’s always better with her there.

2. She’s a truly special person.

We hear it all the time, but even if you had to imagine a great BFF for yourself, there’s no one like her. Nobody has the same taste in music, the same great laugh, or the same inner diva. She’s her own kind of fabulous and you love to watch her work her own style.

3. You’re glad you met them.

From the first meeting, you knew there was something there. Since that day, you’ve learned more about each other than you thought you’d ever be willing to share or dare to ask. There’s so much you have in common. You feel like you can talk to her about anything, which you pretty much do. She makes you view things from a new perspective, and you see some things more clearly. If it weren’t for meeting her, maybe you never would have understood why some people are the way they are, or how you want to appear to others. She’s definitely made a positive impact.

4. Your life wouldn’t be the same without them.

You’d have one less friend. You’d be calling someone else right after your breakup. She never would have introduced you to her friends and family you’ve come to know and love. You would’ve felt alone at that game. Driving past her house wouldn’t make you smile and giggle at a memory. She’d be one less familiar face you’d see in the world. That band’s song wouldn’t be your soul jam. That café wouldn’t be one of your favorite hangouts. Who knows if you ever would have gotten up the courage to apply for that job or talk to that guy without her. You definitely wouldn’t be who you are today if it wasn’t for her magic that she has graciously sprinkled into your life.

5. Even though they’re not perfect, you think they’re pretty fantastic.

Let’s be honest. Sometimes it’s nice to see someone else do stupid things. We all get insecure at times, and it’s nice to remind ourselves even our role models are human. When she screws up, you’re there to lift her up, and you two can find a way to laugh about it later. Everyone needs to laugh at themselves once in a while, and you two do, almost to the point of peeing your pants. You may fight sometimes, but in the end you always make up and realize it’s not as important as your friendship. Relationships either have occasional fights or slowly crumble from passive tension. You’d rather get mad at each other and say what needs said. Maybe there’s some cruel things said, or even tears. Sisters fight, but in the end it’s only because they care. Usually she’s actually right. That guy wasn’t worth your time, you don’t have an excuse for ditching her, and nobody will ever look good in that dress. After things are said and done, you’re still there for each other and your relationship is stronger. She makes you a better person.

6. You have the best times together.

Nobody gets the crazy inside jokes you have from those awkward cafeteria conversations or that time with that guy and that thing happened. You start laughing at random places and times thinking about when you two embarrassed yourselves at the mall and couldn’t stop laughing at that crazy girl who decided to give you attitude. Your vibes sync, so you can be ready to party together, chill, or be ridiculously silly. You get each other’s humor. You bring out each other’s fun side. Any car ride, even if it’s just to the grocery store, is a potential jam session and great new story to tell.

7. This year is going to be your best yet.

One of the most invaluable gifts life gives you is your memories. There’s so many places you want to visit, new foods and shops you want to try and many adventures to go on together. Most of all you want to laugh your hardest and smile as much as possible. Make sure she remembers to accomplish that, you’ll need her by your side. It takes a true partner in crime to take on the world together. Your friendship is only going to get better and stronger from here on. Here’s to another great year of being besties.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
