Basketball is great but March Madness can only keep college students entertained for so long. Especially when your own team is nowhere near Final Four bound. This absence of an ample sports team to cheer on can cause nostalgia for Saturday game days.
So dear football officials, here's why we need to bring football back a little early.
College students are in a summer lull. It's been a month since school let's out. We are stuck with large amounts of free time during the day and Netflix really isn't cutting it anymore.
One simply just can't tailgate only in the fall. Tailgating is something you crave year round. We try to suppress our feelings of longing for hanging out in the backs of trucks, but insanity is starting to hit as students remain without this for extended periods of time. Students could try tailgating before baseball games, but really that's just unhealthy.
My game day dresses are starting to get lonely. The cute boots and dresses have been shoved to the back of the closet for too long. Warm weather has struck again and everyone wants to see the bow ties and cowboy boots come out of hiding. But we need an event to wear them to. We need Game Day.
It's time for all students to antagonize the competition again. Students are starting to become catty with each other. School spirit is at a minimum. Really campus just isn't as happy as when we first got here. Nothing brings students back together though like an opposing team to root against. A couple of chants and songs and Disney World will have some competition for happiest place on earth.
We're actually starting to miss the obnoxious mascot. During regular game season it's easy to wonder why the university spent money on a giant bird/dog/cat costume. Yeah its cute for the kids, but the why is he wondering around the student section? However, by springtime he's a sight for sore eyes. He's a symbol of what we miss the most. Really anything in close association with our beloved football team is more than welcomed while we go through this dry spell.
Because nothing beats the craziness of game day. It's hard not to feel alive weaving through the crowds of alumni and students who have all gathered outside the stadium. Excitement only builds once inside with the jumping and yelling of a couple thousand people all at once. The atmosphere can't be replicated and that's why we as students miss it so much.
It's unfair that we only get four football seasons while we're college student. So please, all you big wigs in charge of college football do us a favor and reinstate game day a couple months early.
