You didn't sign up for recruitment just so you could go on socials or take pictures blowing glitter at a camera. Or maybe you did. Whatever your reasons for joining a sorority, chances are you fell in love with a lot more than you thought you would. From the little daily perks of being branded a sorority girl, to the more important reasons that had you crying on pref night and running home to that chapter, here are a few of the reasons you still fall in love with your chapter a little more everyday.
1. Two Words: Comfort Colors.
When they hand you your bid card, they might as well just hand you a Comfort Colors tank with it, because these shirts will slowly but surely take over your wardrobe. You’ll become a t-shirt snob because of this perfectly faded and soft brand, and you’ll hate your t-shirt chair every time they make a new one, because how could you possibly say no? You pray your parents don’t look too closely at your OmegaFi statement every time you write your name and size down on that list in chapter. But the $15 is so worth it, because nothing is quite as satisfying as rolling out of your bed for your 9 a.m., pulling on a pair of leggings, and throwing on that soft date-party tee that’s probably longer than the dress you wore out last night. Did you sleep in that shirt? Maybe. Will anyone be able to tell? Nope.
2. Food. Lots of it.
Whether it’s endless meal plan at your chapter’s house, or the weekly (or daily...no one’s judging) Chick-fil-A breakfast with your sisters, being in a sorority makes meal time the social equivalent of happy hour. Those chapter visits from fraternities? Sure, it’s nice to get a little testosterone in the room of 120+ girls, but the real reason your clapping probably has something to do more with that box of perfectly iced cupcakes that just entered the room and not the guy who’s holding them. When you join a sorority, just remember: your sisters always have your back, but they also have your stomach.
3. You're still allowed to play dress up.
Kate Spade once said “Dress up begins at age five and never truly ends.” Well, I beg to differ. After college, when will you be asked on a date function where you’re required to wear head to toe camouflage to a bar? Or use a theme as an excuse to wear slippers and a robe downtown? Let’s face it, realistically this is almost certainly the last time it will be acceptable for you to wear a tutu and glitter to the bar.
Or maybe anywhere...
4. Always having a study buddy...or five.
Being a member of a sorority, you now have access to those who have fought the scary academic battles you’re bound to go through. What classes are the best to take when? What professors should I avoid? You now have a whole army of academic advisers–ones that you actually know–who will teach and guide you with their ancient wisdom and Erin Condren planners. I mean who doesn't want to pull an all-nighter with sisters riding–and probably crashing–the same struggle bus as you? Just because you have to suffer, doesn’t mean you have to do it alone.
5. Networking that will save your life.
Whether it’s for an internship, a job, or even a last minute formal date, you can count on your sisters to help you out. Sure, LinkedIn can give you the little boost you need, but there’s nothing quite like the networking that a group of motivated young women can provide. In a world of it being 30% talent and skill and 70% who you know, the connections you make in your sisterhood will at some point get you that job or internship you need.
6. Crafts. Crafts. Crafts.
Step aside Martha Stewart. Maybe it was something in your initiation ritual or the meal plan water, but you’re now the glittery sorority version of Picasso. Crafts for your little? No sweat. Your big’s graduation present? You finished it months ago. That cooler you need to make for the last-minute formal you were asked on? Fueled by Starbucks and covered with Mod Podge, this cooler stands no chance against you and your Pinterest board.
7. There's no place like home.
Most importantly, your
sorority, whether you realize it or not, becomes your home. But let's get something straight: your sorority doesn’t have to have a chapter house for you to call it home. Home is
that feeling of walking into a lecture hall of over 300 students, and having
smiling familiar faces saving you a seat. Home is your big’s bed, where you two
may have spent just a little too much time binge watching Netflix and eating
pizza. Home is the sister you call up when you’re stressed over the final you’re
about to take. Home is being there for one another no matter what time, no
questions asked. Home is not a bid card. Home isn’t Greek letters. Home is not
a beautiful house on Greek Park. Those are just some of the roads that might take you
to what you were looking for the whole time: sisterhood.
