14 Lessons You Learn Through Working In The Service Industry

Recently, I had dinner with one of my good friends from my sorority. She stated that she will make her kids work at least once in the service industry while growing up so that they can learn a lot of the same lessons that she learned while working in the service industry before she graduated from college.

Here are 10 lessons to learn from working in the service industry that all workers can relate to.

1. Don't take anything personally.

Giphy

It's important to not be too sensitive in the service industry especially when stress runs high during busy hours.

2. People's needs vary.

Giphy

People's orders can be either extremely simple or extremely complicated.

3. It's important to lean on your coworkers.

A well-oiled machine is much better during work hours.

4. Slow days are the worst days.

Giphy

It's hard to make time go by fast when you have had two customers in the span of five hours.

5. Not everyone likes spending money even when they go out to eat.

Giphy

People can tip fifty cents to twenty dollars.

6. Work is a lot more enjoyable to a soundtrack that you like playing in the restaurant.

Giphy

Nothing is better than singing along to your favorite songs playing on the jukebox.

7. You have a better understanding of what it's like to deal with customers when the roles are reversed.

Giphy

With knowing deeper on what it's like to be in the service industry, you will be more patient with your servers in the future when you go out to eat yourself.

8. Servers don't make any money if you don't tip well.

Giphy

A lot of people think that servers make at least minimum wage so they don't feel obligated to tip as much. However, that is not the case.

9. You might have a bad day but it's always best to still have a good attitude.

Giphy

Leave your home stresses at home, and have a smile on your face at work and not be a downer.

10. You can't be everything.

Giphy

You can't please everyone and you're only one person and can't give every customer the whole world.

11. Work is better when you're working with your friends.

Giphy

Work is always more exciting when I get to work the same shifts as my friends.

12. Working at sports bars are better when you actually enjoy sports.

Giphy

I'm just glad that the world cup is on this summer.

13. Having to wear a work uniform means doing a lot more laundry.

Giphy

I stay getting wing sauce on my uniform shirts.

14. Minimum wage is not enough to live off of.

Giphy

I never understood why people want to raise the minimum wage until now.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
