Frailty Thy Name Is Woman!

Not another feminist article, just simply stating the facts.

Frailty Thy Name Is Woman!

It’s the 21st century, people. Our country has been through revolutions, social movements, and countless calls for change throughout the centuries. Our history is ridden with moments in time that we are absolutely horrified, ashamed, and humiliated of (as we should be). Likewise, we have learned a lot through the undeniably fool-proof process of trial and error and have ended up creating the seemingly awesome society that we live in today. We should be sooo proud of ourselves. Truly, we have come such a long way. But there is still much farther to go.

I am far from a preachy feminist. Not even close. Despite this, I still do believe that a woman can be equal to a man on all fronts. Thus, when I found out that the goals I score during a collegiate co-ed intramural soccer game count as two points instead of one because I’m a girl, I was in disbelief.

Does the world really believe that us females need extra coddling, reassurance, and bonus points simply because we have a little extra estrogen? Apparently so.

Are we assumed so athletically inferior to males that when we score a goal it is considered that impressive and we earn two points for it? Looks like it.

Is the fact that I am knowingly entering myself in a competitive environment against 'big, strong men' not enough of a confirmation that I am comfortable with my own situation? No way, Jose.

Do I not get the opportunity to engage in a unisex physical activity without the occurrence of a rule change to level the playing field? Think again.

While this is a minor issue compared to the obstacles women have overcome and the ones they still face, I am firm believer that if us women really want equality, we need to welcome it in all its different forms and facets. Yes, I mean we should sign up for the draft when we turn 18, just like the young men of American do. Yes, I mean we should be forced to endure the same physical testing requirements as male Navy Seals, Marines, and Rangers. Yes, I mean we should make the same amount of money as a man. Yes, I mean we deserve equality in the professional workplace.

Once we stop accepting exceptions and special circumstances for ourselves, the world will follow. You cannot logically half-way demand equality without further fueling the argument that we are emotional and weak beings.

For now, I guess I’ll be forced to take advantage of my double-point bonus when I take the field during intramural games -- at least now you know I’m not happy about it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
