You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13
Serving others is what we are called to do. When we selflessly give to others we, in turn, become so rich in happiness, gratitude, and knowledge. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to serve the lord and hundreds of high schoolers and their young life leaders at SharpTop Cove Young Life camp. The work was challenging but way worth it. During my short stay, I learned so much about myself, and what it means to serve others.
When we were assigned jobs on our fist day, I jumped at the idea of being a server. I thought this would be the perfect way to get to interact with all the campers and escape the hard work. But boy, was I wrong and I am forever grateful. This turned out to be the hardest work I have ever taken part in. Passed all the complaining, gross dirty dishes and heavy serving platters, I learned something. I would wake up early, wash dishes, bus tables, and walk on aching feet, a thousand times again. Why? Because someone left that camp having the best weekend of their life. I would do all that hard work over and over again just so one person could learn about Jesus Christ, and the joy he can bring into your life. I set the table for someone who learned about Jesus. I played a part in making their camp experience so amazing. They had the best weekend of their life, and I am so glad. I learned how good it felt to serve others. I learned how to work along side strangers. Those strangers being my brothers and sisters in Christ. I learned that I am capable of hard work, and I learned how rewarding it is.
This weekend I was a server. Not just a server of hot pancakes, and water refills, but a server of the best. I was a server to others and a server of Jesus Christ. Let me tell you a little bit about Jesus. He was a server too. He is so giving and loving. Jesus said, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45) Later in Philippians 2:4 Paul adds to this when he says “Each of you should be concerned not only about your own interests but the interests of others as well."
We are called to serve others, and that is what we are here to do. In the bible, Christ is pointed to as a great example of what we should be, how we should serve other. Paul later talks about how we should have the same attitude towards others as Christ has. "Jesus Christ laid aside his majesty in order to serve humanity. His death is the supreme example of his servanthood: the fulfilling of the will of God his Father." (bible.org) Like I said, Jesus is kind, He is giving, He serves others so well and so selflessly. As for me, I strive to serve like Him. I want to be selfless and give as much and as often I can. This weekend I gave my time to work crew, and I would not hesitate to do it again. How do you serve the Lord, and how can you serve more like Him?
Prayer: Hey God it's me, I am so thankful for the opportunities you have given me to serve others and the knowledge I gain from serving You. I pray today that You help me serve more often, and more like You. You give so selflessly and so wonderfully and I will admire that forever. In Jesus name, Amen.
