Why did Harry meet Sally? Not why, but how.
Psychics everywhere would argue that before we are born we are assigned a soulmate. The other half you, the tomato to your toma-to if you will. However, from the beginning of time this theory has been picked at by cynics worldwide. If it’s true and if somewhere out there a cosmic court has taken place and decided exactly who we were meant to be with before we even knew what love was, then why do we have such trouble wrapping our minds around the fact that we may be trotting fate paved pathways? I had to wonder, if the mallet really has hit the gavel in a courthouse made of cosmic matter and we have our soulmates already picked out for us, then what was left to chance?
On a rainy Tuesday night, a petite sized woman and a rather burly looking man came face to face on the streets of Chicago because of a quick stop under an awning outside of a café in search of a dry refuge. Their eyes meet and they pause for a second as a feeling of familiarity washed over them. The sound of rain around them came to a brief pause as they entered a world alone together. He closed his umbrella and she let her walls fall for a brief second in hopes that the man she had just mysteriously met on the streets could really be Mr. Right.
What are the odds they both chose to run under the same awning for shelter? What will they do next? Will he fake a smile and decide to brave the rain in fear of actually having to connect with the woman he just locked eyes with, will she ask him to dinner in hopes of spending more time getting lost in his sea-foam green eyes? It’s safe to say we could question the scenario to death. However, maybe some encounters are better left untouched by our wandering minds. Maybe they met on fates behalf.
By it very definition, the word serendipity means the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. In other words, the word serendipity describes a wondrous happening that occurred by chance. We have been reminded through love stories that have been written throughout the ages that we are all bound to find love in one form or another. Whether it be the love shared with a significant other or a good friend. It seems love is inescapable. I have always found that humans need three things to live. Food, air, water and love. It is a well-known rule of the universe that we will always find our way to what we need. You too will meet that special someone in a wildly unexpected way. He might have been riding the same train as you to work the other day. He may even have served you dinner last night at that tiny restaurant you love so much.
And so, it was on that particularly serendipitous Tuesday night, the very petite woman and the rather burly man decided to give it all a shot. He asked her to coffee and she replied faster than the evening rain could fall. As they walked away from the awning they had met under, the petite woman smiled at him hoping that it was her turn to find a romance worth writing about. Perhaps it was just a mistake their meeting or perhaps it was fate. But hey, when the universe throws you a bone, who are you to walk away from destiny?
