Breaking up isn’t fun. Nobody wants to lose their best friend and start over with someone else. I try to look at things a bit differently, though. I love who I have become and I owe a lot of it to my exes. No matter how long or short the relationship is, there is always something to take away from it. So here is a thank you for teaching me my lessons.
1. Thank you for my first kiss
…And showing me how to kiss. I would have been lost without it. So, thank you for already knowing how to kiss.
2. Thank you for showing me how to dance
We were both terrible, but I will never forget practicing with you before our first school dance. (We killed it!) That may have been the only dance we went to together but it was one of my favorites. Thank you for spinning me and not letting me fall.
3. Thank you for showing me it’s okay to break the rules sometimes
I was shy and you were the bad boy. You took me out of my comfort zone and gave me some fun times I will never forget. Thank you for teaching me how to have fun.
4. Thank you for teaching me I shouldn’t try to change someone
You were my high school sweetheart. At first, we were the same but three years later we just didn’t fit anymore. Trying to bend your paths to fit each other doesn’t always work. Between your hard head and my high expectations, we couldn’t make it work. Thank you for teaching me that no matter how much you want to, you can’t change someone to be who you want them to be.
5. Thank you for showing me how I should be treated and helping me understand that love can’t be bought.
You treated me like a princess. If I ever needed anything I knew you would be there as soon as possible. I now know what I deserve and how high to set my standards in the future. I thought I was happy but I was actually blinded by all the pretty things you put in front of me. So when those were gone, so was my happiness. Thank you for teaching me not to get distracted by the shiny things and to focus on my heart.
6. Thank you for teaching me not to sacrifice my own values for love.
I tried so hard to make it work with you. So. So. Hard. So hard that I even let things slide that were important to me. So hard that I started to join in and do the things I didn’t normally do. Yes, I tried so hard and I still lost you, but I am so much happier now that I am back in my own skin. Thank you for teaching me to never sacrifice my own values for love ever again.
Thanks to my exes, my future relationship can only get better. You may not find you true love with the first person that you date, but that’s okay. The lessons you learn help you get even closer to finding The One.
