The Student Association Senate passed a resolution calling for cleaning and sanitary supplies to be put in lecture halls and classrooms.
Currently there is supplies in such places as bathrooms and food courts, but no stations exist near common places that hundreds of students pass through every day.
“A common way that illnesses are spread is through everyday contact with classroom equipment such as tables, desks, and chairs,” the resolution said.
The co-sponsors on this resolution were Sen. Andrew Cutrone and Sen. Conner Dunleavy. The resolution passed the senate unanimously.
Cutrone said that the state of the classroom, that he is a TA for, is filthy. “The students want this,” he said.
“I asked my students in my class… and everyone I ran into, I did a really informal survey. They grabbed on to that idea very quickly, and of course it passed through the senate,” Cutrone said.
The resolution said that the cleaning supplies include, and are not limited to, hand sanitizer stations and disinfectant wipes.
“I think that even more importantly the faculty want it,” he said. In the resolution, it states that some professors bring their own cleaning supplies to ensure that the classroom is clean and that is “clearly” not their responsibility.
Altilio and Cutrone both said that they will be working closely with the director of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, Lisa-Anne Donohue, to make this resolution happen.
“I think it’s a great idea,” Senate Head Chair Jarrett Altilio said. “I think it’s always a good thing to have that conversation started with the relevant administrators, because these resolutions so lead to changes.”
