Okay, so I’ve only experienced one semester of college so far, but now that I’m on my second, I’m a little confused…
What happened to syllabus week? Everyone talks about this comfortable grace period in between the start of a semester and when the work actually begins. The first two classes are typically dedicated to going over the syllabus, listing course expectations, and learning everyone’s names through those classic icebreakers. I remember the first day of my very first semester... I was prepared for this scary, intellectual college course. Instead, I found a laid back professor who was excited to hear all about us. This went on all day! Professors discussing office hours and sticking to all of the contents of their carefully typed syllabi.
Maybe it’s ‘cause we’re on the second semester, or maybe we should just expect things to get a lot harder from here on out, but syllabus week was not a thing at all this time around!
I showed up to my first class, expecting it to be just like it was back in September and then bam! Out of nowhere we skipped straight past the introductions and dived head first into a whole lotta financial accounting! I’m not complaining ‘cause I always knew that college would get harder but jeez, this semester is gonna be a toughie.
I know I can get through it, it’s just finding the right amount of motivation and grit to get everything done and to do it well. Sometime’s the work ethic comes naturally, but maybe it takes reminding myself how much money I pay per class. Either way, I know how important it is to do well, this work does prepare me for my future after all.
My one consolation is that I’m not alone! I know plenty of my peers who’ve already been assigned multi-page papers, chapter readings, and more. So if you’re out there, wondering what happened to syllabus week and searching for the will to get through these next few months before summer, hold on!
Here’s to a solid semester and the hopes of some fun assignments to get us through, good luck!
