Holy premier season, Batman!
This fall is particularly exciting, as it not only brings colorful leaves and Pumpkin Spice Lattes, but also a whole new line-up of exciting new seasons of all our favorite shows! Below are the six season premiers we're all looking forward to this fall. Read on, but be weary of spoilers.
Grey's Anatomy (Season 13, September 22nd)
Let's start with (in my opinion) the biggest and baddest of the premiers. Grey's Anatomy. Coming into its 13th season, Grey's has entered into a sort of "Grandfather" stage in TV dramas. There are only a handful of shows that have reached 13 seasons and beyond, let alone kept their reputations, and according to the show creator, Shonda Rhimes, the beloved Grey's Anatomy is still going strong. That's not to say, however, that the show didn't have its rough moments. To the die-hard Grey's fans, Shonda has become sort of an "Angel of Death", killing off our favorite characters with a wave of her hand, and sending us all into a frenzy season after season. Why we still watch the show? Most of us still don't know. There was one death, however, that many of us have yet to recover from- Dr. Derek Shepherd. There are several rumors running around as to why he left/got fired, but not one fan will tell you that they were okay with how it ended for Derek and Meredith. RIP McDreamy. Season 13 is rumored to focus on the "OG's", or main cast. Which I find ironic, because half of them aren't even on the show anymore at the hands of- you guessed it- Ms. Shonda Rhimes. To be fair, though, it's not always Shonda's decision when a cast member leaves. Sometimes it is the actors choice to leave the show, such as Sandra Oh, or more recently, Sara Ramirez. Sara's decision to leave Grey's and her character, Callie Torrez, is still a fresh wound for most. She dropped the bomb after the season 12 finale, so Shonda never got a chance to give fans the closure we needed for Callie, which I'm sure will be apparent over the next season. Grey's has had its moments, but its been on the air for 13 seasons now and ratings have only gone up. I have no doubt that this season will be any different!
The Walking Dead (Season 7, October 23rd)
If there's one thing the producers of The Walking Dead know how to do, its how to bring people together. In my 18 years of watching TV, I have never seen a reaction to a season finale quite like season six of TWD. After seeing hundreds of articles with titles like "7 Reasons Why Negan Killed Abraham" and "Why it's Obvious Daryl is the One Who Dies", we're no closer to finding out the actual truth. Fans have have even gone as far as watching the last scene of the finale frame by frame and comparing view points to see who faces the scary end of Lucille. One thing is for sure, though- we aren't prepared. On Chris Hardwick's talk show, The Talking Dead, he hosted a season six recap episode in which there were several cast interviews warning fans about the gruesome fate awaiting one of the characters. On a lighter note, this season brings the character, Ezekiel, and his tiger (yes, tiger), Shiva into the plot. Ezekiel is the head of a community called "The Kingdom" and is thought of as the polar opposite of Negan. This season is rumored to take us back to the very "black and white" concept of good vs. evil, which will be interesting, given the amount of "grey" in the previous season. People are also expecting a lot of biblical aspects. Given that the newest character, Ezekiel, is a protagonist, head of his community, and the arch-enemy of Negan, our antagonist and head of his community, it totally makes sense that the writers would be pushing a sort of Jesus vs Satan theme- and in a world with very little religion, this could be interesting. Besides, with other characters with names like "Jesus" and "Abraham", how can you really argue? Take the next few weeks to prepare, and invest in some tissues, because I don't think this season premier is going to be a happy episode.
Once Upon a Time (Season 6, September 25th)
After an exciting season of the Underworld, Greek mythology, and a giant, obvious theme of alter-egos, I'm excited to see what this season has to offer. Promos have teased the appearance of our favorite Arabian prince, Aladdin! And there's no doubt that the legendary Evil Queen won't make a visit or two to torment Regina. Once has had its ups and downs in plot-lines and characters, but this is one of those TV shows you can't quite give up on. The creators have "jumped the shark" over and over again, yet viewers keep watching. This may just be because fans identify with the characters, or maybe because there aren't many shows like Once. Whatever the reason may be, the show has loyal fans, and that my be the only reason its still hanging on.
Masters of Sex (Season 4, September 11th)
Season 3 of Masters of Sex had one of the hardest finales to watch. Every decision that Bill made had me screaming at my TV. Virginia wasn't in the clear with me, either, but it was hard to blame her for leaving Bill in the end. What a lot of viewers don't know is that the entire series is based on the real-life scientists Masters and Johnson. Early on in the series, the show follows closely to the events that actually happened between the two scientists, including their affair. The show, however, does take some turns away from the actual events to protect the relatives Virginia Johnson and William Masters throughout the series, so not everything you see is according to history. The season four promo left a lot to the imagination, which is a new concept for the show, but in just a few seconds, it promised a whole new season of drama between our favorite scientists.
Quantico (Season 2, September 25th)
Season one of Quantico was nothing but explosive, dramatic, and enticing every second of the way. After the season-long build up of the "who's the terrorist" mystery, we were finally granted the answer. I don't know about you guys, but I was incredibly conflicted with the terrorist reveal. I could never decide if Liam's role as the culprit was genius or too trope-like. Which ever side you're on, I think we could all agree that the show deserves a second season. Although, I'm excited for the possibilities, I'm also a little worried for the plot line. In my humble opinion, I think the series peaked too fast. And while I'd like to think that the writers will come up with something, what can really pass up several bombs, character deaths, and terrorist mysteries? While I'm not exactly sure what season two entails, I'm sure it will be nothing but exciting.
New Girl (Season 6, September 20th)
In the beginning, I wasn't too sure with how I felt about Jess being temporarily replaced by Reagan, due to the fact that Zooey Deschanel was heavily pregnant while filming the season. As the show went on, though, I came to enjoy Reagan's dry, sarcastic sense of humor and her ever-hilarious, awkward relationship with Nick. And surprisingly enough, most fans seem to feel the same way. There are rumors rolling around that Megan Fox is set to reprise her role as the infamous Reagan, and while many fans are excited for her return, it could mean the official end for Jess and Nick's potential relationship. I was always a fan of their relationship and was pretty disappointed when they broke it off. The chemistry between their characters was palpable (THAT KISS SCENE, THOUGH??) and they will always be one of my favorite on-screen relationships. As season six rolls around, I can just about guarantee that we will get a peak at what "married life" means for Cece and Schmidt and a lot of drama between Jess, Nick, and Reagan!
Whether you're into comedy, drama, or something in-between, this fall brings a huge schedule of premiers that would interest anyone! Go forth, and indulge your love for TV, because you certainly won't be the only one!
