School Dress Codes: Are They Too Much?

Why should women have to hide their bodies because it is a distraction to men?

When it comes to dress codes at schools around the world, more and more girls are starting to speak their opinions.

At my Junior High School, we were not allowed to wear spaghetti straps, shorts that were not shorter than our middle finger, low V-necks, ripped jeans above the knees, or a bra strap showing etc. On the other hand, when it came to guys clothing they could pretty much wear whatever they wanted, as long as it did not show their chests, etc.

When we were growing up, us girls were taught not to show off too much skin and if we did it was considered a distraction to the boys. How would wearing a spaghetti strap tank top distract boys? Why should women have to grow up to hide their bodies, because some boys would be distracted by us? Could this be the problem of why some girls have self-confidence issues today? We may never know, but what we do know is that maybe it is time to change the dress codes at schools.

If schools were to change the dress code for women, it could potentially limit the number of women we see today trying to be comfortable in their own skin. An example of what a school dress code for women could be; No showing of any bras, no showing of the butt, no see-through clothing unless wearing cami or shorts underneath, no ripped jeans to where the pockets are showing, or other body parts. These could be just a few.

In some schools, girls have worn clothes that go against the school dress codes to see what would happen. They wanted to make a point that girls should not have to cover themselves up because boys can not control themselves. They are trying to show that they deserve better and that they will not stand for inequality when it comes to different genders.

Another thing we should do as a society is educate men about how women should not be seen as an object and only used because they are pretty. Instead, men should be taught that women are just as equal as they are, they should be treated with respect, and overall how women should not be a distraction to men. Life isn't all about the looks or how one dresses. What really matters is whats on the inside. Remember that. You are all loved no matter what others may say.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
