San Francisco has always been a 'go-to' spot for me and my family. Throughout the years, I've become more accustomed to the lifestyle and culture that comes with the city. During my last visit, I took a step out of my comfort zone, and ventured off into the big city. I was able to immerse myself in the San Franciscan way of life, and got a little taste of of how I would fair in this amazing city. Below is a list of 'musts' from this SoCal Native:
1. Take Highway 101 North
Taking Highway 101 is a couple hours longer than your usual six to seven hour drive via I-5 North, however the extra hours include a coastal view, and countless photo ops. Driving up from Orange County, you will find yourself in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and don't forget to make a stop in Monterey! Even if you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, I guarantee this route won't disappoint. Any way you turn, beauty is inevitable.
2. Indulge At Local Shops
There is nothing more satisfying than being served something that you know someone put their whole heart into. As I went to grab breakfast one morning, I walked along Grant Street and Green Avenue and came across Le Chat Rouge. This French pâtisserie had only been open for about three months. The smell (and taste) of fresh croissants, and dedication to the French inspiration made every dollar count. Local shops are committed to having their business thrive. This means excellent service, and 110% in everything they do. It also was a plus since I'm a sucker for anything that is Parisienne-esque. C'est vrai!
3. Walk
Walking in San Francisco gives you more opportunities to appreciate what's around you. I actually met up with one of my aunts who's a San Francisco native, and while walking I pointed out different murals and street art that she had never seen before -- she grinned and said, "See! I would have never noticed that if we didn't walk. I usually drive right past it." Walking not only is the best option for avoiding traffic, but also for opening your eyes to the beauty that surrounds you. Get your face out of your phone, and look up; you'll be surprised at what lies ahead.
4. Play Tourist
If 'playing local' takes the vaca(y) out of your vacation, going back to being a tourist! Take a photo at every landmark. Stop in the middle on the road to take a photo. Visit the Ghirardelli Factory. Hangout with the sea lions. Whatever it may be, it's your vacation, so you are in control of what you think is fun! (Tourist 101: Eat clam chowder in a bread bowl at Boudin -- located on Fisherman's Wharf & Pier 39).
5. Visit The Golden Gate Bridge After Hours
I had the opportunity of visiting the Golden Gate around 11:00PM, and it was one of the most unforgettable moments. As I stood, the brisk breeze swept past my face; when I looked up, the Golden Gate was halfway covered with fog, and the lights were peaking through, reflecting off onto the bay. Those moments have probably been my favorite throughout all my trips. After hours, you are not left with big crowds, and loud tourists; no, you are left in a sweet serenity and presence that is absolutely priceless.
(Unfortunately no photo was able to capture the beauty of themoment, so above is a photo midday -- still stunning!)
