With the newest Pokémon game to hit the markets it has already ensnared people of all ages. The oldest generation to the youngest are venturing out into the world to try Nintendo's latest concept of GPS based gaming. This pushes the boundaries for gamers and children alike as we go to places we'd never even consider before. These new places aren't always the safest though. Already we've had people involved in accidents, muggings, and more. So, what happens when school opens again? We must all prepare for what may come.
When the summer is over and school is back in session, Pokémon GO will be a new and foreign concept to many administrators. Principals, teachers and bus drivers must be aware and prepared to deal with situations involving the game. As my father is one of the administrators for transportation, I am aware of how this may affect him and his employees. One of the most dangerous times during school hours occurs not when the students are at school, but when they are being transported between home and school.
For parents and bus drivers, it is imperative that kids pay full attention to the driver during bus stops. The drivers have been trained to guide students safely to and from stops. Should you see a child paying more attention to an app instead of the driver, the consequences could be deadly. Here's a small list of things to pay attention for if you are going to be near a bus stop.
1. Children playing Pokémon GO will be staring at their phone, often oblivious to surroundings. Make sure they are aware of the dangers of being near roads.
2. One feature requires a person to stop and look around for the "hiding" Pokémon. This can cause a child to stop abruptly and search around. It will appear as if they are looking to take a picture of something they cannot see right away.
3. They may often be in groups and, again, not aware, so be sure to have at least one person paying attention to their surroundings and giving directions and warnings for the group.
As a player myself, I only wish that we may all play it safely. Please be aware of where you are going and the dangers present. Go in groups, steer clear of roads and be aware of your surroundings. Parents, speak to your children about safety and smart times when it's okay to play. Players, be smart about where you are and keep an eye out for your fellow trainers. Nobody wants to see anyone get hurt.
Pokémon GO is a free app that can be downloaded on most smartphones and was released on July 6, 2016. It is free-to-play and uses a new augmented reality system that allows players to use their real life travels to catch and battle with Pokémon. The camera is used to spot nearby Pokémon while simultaneously using the screen to throw pokéballs at the target Pokémon. Popular shops and historical sites are where places called Pokéstops reside. These allow players to restock on items and claim gyms for their teams.
