Rushing, As Told By 'Bridesmaids'

Rushing, As Told By 'Bridesmaids'

The above "Bridesmaids" quote plays through my head and sums up my mood throughout the majority of my young days. Hence, why I went through recruitment to find my own "best of them" with which to party, study, eat, go to the gym, and do just about anything and everything. If you've signed up for recruitment, you've made the first step towards doing the same, but there's still a number of steps to come before finding your own "best of them" on bid day.

You've heard that being in a sorority is, "not four years, it's for life." You've heard that, "from the outside looking in you can never understand it, from the inside looking out, you can never explain it." You've heard it's where you'll find your future bridesmaids! Despite the sentimental tug at the heartstrings and impressive four/for wordplay, though, the quotes found on Pinterest about rushing don't really give an accurate representation of what's to come over the few days of recruitment before you find your home, sorority sisters, and consequently, future bridesmaids.

Lucky for you, the ultimate Bridesmaid herself, Kristen Wiig, is here to give you a realistic account of the recruitment process so you'll know exactly what's about to go down on the path to finding your own Annie, Megan, Helen, and Lillian.

1. You’ll show up to recruitment orientation, get all the details of the upcoming few days, and sit there internally processing everything like...

2. Someone will take it all way too seriously and ask 15 questions about what to wear, what to eat before, what to talk/not talk about, etc. and you'll just be sitting there like this...

3. Your recruitment counselor will tell you how much (how little) time you have between each party and you'll stare at her like this...

4. You'll arrive at your first party and the doors will open to 178 girls screaming their sorority chant and you’ll consider hiding or leaving.

5. Before you can run away, though, a girl will pick you up at the door and you’ll start feeling a little more comfortable with the whole “rush” thing.

6. Just when you're really hitting it off with said girl, you’ll be introduced to another girl. It will be loud so you'll hear about 50 percent of her name, and you'll spend the remainder of the conversation trying to get a glimpse of her name tag.

7. At this point you'll be feeling like a lost, deaf puppy, when a new girl will swoop in and things will start looking up. You'll connect over your favorite restaurant, shared career goal, or mutual friend. Could this be your future big?

8. She'll ask you a question but you'll have been so busy dreaming of your future big/little dates and trying not to get distracted by the nine billion other conversations going on in the room, that your mind will go blank and you'll just stand there like this.

9. You’ll leave and wonder why you suddenly became socially inept in that room.

Oh well, on to the next day.

10. It’s a new day and you’re feeling like a pro now that you know what to expect. You'll redeem yourself today.

11. You’ll start to realize which sororities you like and you’ll leave all the other parties like this.

12. Before you know it, pref day will be around the corner and you'll walk in like this.

13. Your conversation will be going great, but deep down you'll be most excited about the cupcakes, popcorn, mocktail, etc. that you finally get to enjoy during the last day. Where was all this during the first two days? It would have been nice to have a drink that first day after talking to your 40th girl at your ninth house.

14. You’ll leave your two pref houses, while dropping subtle hints to the house you want. "I can't believe you like froyo too hahaha that's so funny, we'll have to go some time."

P.S. The hours between pref day and bid night will drag on and you'll wonder if your not-so-subtle hint was too eager.

15. 6 p.m. will roll around and you'll think it’s finally time to open your bids, but Recruitment Management Team will take this as a time to display their playful, hilarious side, and will make you sit on your bid card, unopened, for upwards of an hour, while you roll your eyes and look at them like this.

16. Finally, after what seems like decades, it will come time to open your bid card, which will be shaking in your hand no matter how much you hate yourself for it.

17. Your heart will skip a beat as you’ll see the name of the house you love, with your name signed below it, and you and the rest of your new pledge class will immediately recognize each other cause you'll be the ones like this.

Are you overreacting? Never.

And to think that’s just be the beginning of your lifelong love story with your sorority.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
