I graduated high school as a a kid who was fascinated by the idea of college and being on my own. I thought I didn't need anything or anyone, and that I was going to be independent. Four years later, I kept an open mind and an open heart and have brothers by my side that I am thankful for every day. I went into freshman year into thinking that "Going Greek" was a joke and got involved in other organizations, but still felt like something was missing from my college experience. Actually, I felt that a part of myself was missing. I didn't know what it was or how I needed to go about finding it but something just wasn't right.
I watched my friends and roommates all join organizations they were so proud of. So come spring, I put everything I had into rush and decided to join a group bigger then myself. Going greek is essentially becoming a part of a long-standing tradition. Contrary to what you may believe, Greek life isn’t about parties; it’s about coming together with other students and creating a support network that promotes growth and development in every member of a chapter. Discussing life ambitions, designing cool shirts, participating in committees and planning events bring you closer to your chapter and those around you.
I am proud to be in a Greek organization. Good, bad and the ugly, I love every aspect of it. By going greek I became part of a family and earned family for a lifetime, and for that I am thankful. My brothers will be standing on the side of the altar at my wedding, they will be there when I have my first child and they will be there on any occasion or time I need them. If nothing else is reaffirmed my belief that being true to yourself is more important than anything else in college, and because of them I have a better understanding for who I am and the type of man I'd like to become.
I followed the organization that resonates with who I was, what I wanted to be, and I let that guide me into the greatest brotherhood I could have ever imagined. I went Greek because it's the little things that make life big.
