Who is the biased one now?

Round 2: 2016 Presidential Election Media

It’s that time again. Media bias 2k16.

This time around, the articles I chose to compare are from FOX News and The New York Times. They discuss Republican nominee Donald Trump’s latest claim about how he prevented former Miss Universe, Alicia Machado, from getting fired.

FOX News

Both articles begin with the quote that Trump shared on Bill O’Reily. The FOX News article used an ellipsis in Trump’s quote that causes one to believe that Trump had sympathy for Machado, recognizing her as a person. Rather, the quote actually reads, “This is a person that I hardly know,” which further distances Trump from the contestant. This news outlet used the quote fully out of context to favor Trump. His actual appearance on Bill O’Reily begins with him completely cutting himself from the Miss Universe pageant and saying that he has never spoken to the former winner for “more than five minutes” in total. The article also goes further in making Machado the villain, discussing an alleged threat to a judge in her “home country” years prior. This seems completely irrelevant to this particular story. Ultimately, this article completely ignored the fact that Trump body-shamed her, and put him in a noble light, making him seem he did a favor for someone he barely knew. He denied the bullying, although Machado said that Trump humiliated her by letting press come in and watch her workout.

New York Times

The New York Times article was much shorter than the FOX News article. It included a direct quote from the Bill O’Reily interview. It says that Trump told O’Reily he "Saved her job because they wanted to fire her for putting on so much weight." Furthermore, Trump said, “Don’t do that, let her try and lose the weight” (Trump, 2016). The article also mentions how Trump believes that he deserves thanks. This is a common response from this nominee, as he often looks for acknowledgement when it is not justified. The lead of this article does not undermine the bullying of Alicia Machado, as it states that he shamed her into losing weight to save her job. The FOX News article ignores the shaming and discusses how her weight gain was a problem that he fixed and did not get the acknowledgement for.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
