Roses Are A Meaningless, Overused Symbol Of Love

Roses may be a romantic tradition, but they've begun to also lack originality.

Roses Are A Meaningless, Overused Symbol Of Love

Many people commonly think of roses as a symbol of love. However, it's becoming too common and is starting to lack originality when gifts are exchanged between a couple. Roses are often the typical gift people buy on Valentine's Day. In fact, according to ProFlowers, about 198 million roses were produced for Valentine's Day in 2010, and men bought about 75 percent of the roses sold in the United States that year. From my perspective, I believe that roses are used as gifts to convey love for one's significant other. However, this idea of roses as a gift is becoming overused and at this rate, will eventually lack meaning.

When one buys roses for their significant other, it lacks effort and time.

The amount of time and effort the giver gives up is minimal. All he or she has to do is to go to a flower shop, and buy the roses. The receiver of the gift knows that buying roses lacked much effort in both the giver's heart and time. However, if he or she do take time and effort picking out each and every rose, the gift is still rather meaningless to show his or her love to their partner. To be more specific, roses aren't exactly an ideal gift due to the fact that they don't last long. Eventually they will die. Since roses are supposedly a symbol of love, their decay may be determined as a symbol of a dying relationship.

I believe that roses have lost their originality.

Despite the fact these flowers possess a sweet aroma, roses lack meaning. They don't really mean love anymore. They are no longer a special symbol of love, rather they've become a generic. Because of this, roses communicate a partner's lack importance to their significant other.

Although some people enjoy receiving roses as gifts, I don't believe that they are a unique gift. In my opinion, unique gifts are homemade gifts. Personally, I would prefer homemade gifts over store-bought gifts, because personal investment means putting in time and effort. Not only that, but homemade gifts are incredibly rare; you can find only one in the entire world.

I believe people should discover a new way of expressing their love for their significant other, such as exchanging homemade gifts. Roses can still be used as gifts, but instead of giving only roses, try giving your significant other a small, personalized gift so they can cherish forever. It will be a meaningful, original symbol of love: a gift that come from one's heart.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
