Roommates: Your Mom Away From Home

Even when you are hours away from home, you can count on your roomies to act as your fill-in mom.

Roommates: Your Mom Away From Home

As little 18 year olds, we are shipped off to a far away land where you must do your own laundry and food is scarce. This scary world of almost adulthood is called college. While these (at least) four years of college may seem beyond frightening, the one consistent thing you can count on is your roommates. Your roommates serve as your friends, movie buddies, and your grocery-shopping gurus. But the one aspect that makes roommates the best are their mom-like tendencies that save you every day.

1. They answer your health questions.

Once the weather starts getting colder and the flu goes around, no one on a college campus is safe. Or when you wake up with two pink eyes. Or a weird cough. Or a “is this normal?” situation. Luckily, your roommate is there to tell you to get your booty out of bed and go to the student health center. Once you come back loaded with antibiotics and Nyquil, your roommate is there for the water delivery and naps for movie nights.

2. They do things your other friends wouldn’t do.

Just like your mom, the boundaries with your roomies are nothing more than a blurred line. From helping you cut the tags out of your new shirt before you go out, to helping scrape the green stuff out of your teeth, your roomie is always there to help without any questions.

3. You argue.

Is it your turn to wash the dishes? Their turn to take out the trash? Your roomies and you know how to hash it out just like you and your mom. Placing blame on them (just like you do to your mom) because it’s easier than admitting that you did something wrong. But the best part is after the nagging is over, the fight is over within minutes. Just like you can’t stay mad at your mom and then get over it before you even get back to your room, it’s the same with your roommates.

4. They make sure you don’t look stupid.

The best part of Friday night ritual is getting ready with all your roommates. Beyoncé playing so loud it can be heard in every room, questionable dance moves and rummaging through each others’ closet to find the perfect outfit. While this process seems like all fun and games, it is your roommates' job to give you the stamp of approval for any outfit. With a simple motherly look, you know that your roomie doesn’t approve of your skimpy short skirt and sparkly crop top. At the moment you may feel a little bummed but in the long run, you should thank them.

5. They listen to you gush over your new guy.

From helping you get ready for your first “Netflix and chill” to waiting for their return to hear every detail, your roommate stays strong with their motherly support. They patiently listen to you while you breakdown his text messages and look through his Facebook photos.

6. They are your shoulder to cry on.

Once that new relationship goes sour, your roommate always comes through with the motherly advice that makes everything seem all right. She understands the steps of grief and knows what to say during each step. Once she receives your heartbreaking text she’s ready with ice cream. A few days later she has her “you are a beautiful girl and if he can’t see that he doesn’t deserve you” pep talk. While she might call him some names that your mom would consider a little harsh, she has your back just like your mother would.

7. They know your weird habits, and don’t judge you.

No matter how sneaky you try to be, people that live with you know all of your quirks. These quirks are natural to your mother but to an outsider may seem a little unorthodox. Whether it be you sleeping with your baby blanket or walking around in your underwear, your roommates are nothing but accepting of your odd ways. Nothing says, “I’m accepting of you odd ways like your mom” than your roommate helping you even out your eyebrows because you can only tweeze one side. They embrace them and understand how vital these habits are to your daily life, just as you accept theirs.

From year to year your roommates may change but the bond you hold throughout the years is unbreakable. They are your at school support system. And while no one can replace your top-notch mom, your roommates can get pretty close.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
