Can Romance At College Be A Thing?

I hate to think of pizza and Netflix as the flowers and chocolate of our generation.

Can Romance At College Be A Thing?

It was mid-summer break, and they couldn’t wait until fall to see each other again. She landed in San Francisco; he was waiting for her at the bottom of the escalator with pink roses behind his back. They didn’t share a formal title, she hadn’t known him for very long, but something told her to go. Well, everything told her to go. She saw pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Area wherever she went — or scrolled on social media. She had a feeling she would love it. There was just something about a city meeting water that captured her.

He wore a nice shirt and jacket, but dressed it down with jeans and Sperrys. It was like gentleman on the top and fraternity man down below. They stepped into the elevator down to the parking garage. Ladies first, as always, a detail about him she was reminded of.

They sat in San Francisco traffic in his silver Mustang on the way to the surprise hotel. He smiled at her and almost hit the car in front as they inched along the highway. “I’m going to get in an accident looking at you,” he said.

They reached the hotel in the heart of the city. He tells her he wanted to stay where he usually stays with his parents but would have had to sell his arm and leg. She assures him this is perfect and catches a glimpse of the bottle of champagne sitting in ice he surprised her with. They then head to the pier — the perfect place to practice the art of Instagram candids.

Where are the love stories of our generation? Are we simply uninspired due to our lack of dating? It's like romance and college are oil and water. And I wonder why that is.

At some point over the years, gentlemen and fraternity men began to carry two different connotations. It was probably around the same time young women started settling for less, and wining and dining became thought of as high maintenance.

Women need to realize they’re worth more than just “hangin’ out.” If he likes you enough, he’ll go the extra mile. Turn down the Netflix offer, and see what happens. If he doesn’t up his game, then he’s not worth it. We’re not dating anymore because we’re settling for the bare minimum.

And to the men, there’s nothing appealing about “Wanna hang out sometime?” When did we lose the balls to call a girl and ask her on a date and call it a date? Do her a favor and save the confusion. Courteous details like this have a big impact on women because they’re so rare in our generation. Chivalry stands out in a girl’s mind like a cool drink in the desert, yet it seems like some well-kept secret. And if you’re not the classic dinner-and-a-movie kind of guy, use your imagination. We appreciate the effort.

I refuse to think of all fraternity men as frat guys. The type that see women as prey of the night or a “Netflix date” the next weekend if they don't get the chance to close.

Everyone has their own “San Francisco” in them for the right girl. It's not purely fictional. And romance isn’t dead. It is merely an endangered art among college students.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
