Derek Shepherd was and always will be one of my favorite characters on television. He was charming, good looking, kind, and an all around wonderful guy. His death was a shock to many fans (including me- I will never get over it). Here's a look back at some of his (and Meredith's) moments in the past ten years at Seattle Grace/Seattle Grace Mercy West/Grey-Sloan Memorial.

Derek and Meredith- the morning after

Who could forget the iconic first scene from the pilot episode of Grey's?

“You're my teacher's teacher."

This is honestly one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. I just think it's so funny and cute.

Derek shows Meredith the trailer

I thought this was such a great moment for him. He tells her about himself and shows her where he lives (that being a trailer on a giant piece of land) and she still accepts him

“You were like coming up for fresh air"

This was such a sweet moment for Derek. Meredith asks him what she was to him and he explains that she wasn't just a one night stand, he's falling for her.

“Pick me. Choose me. Love me."

Let's be honest- this is one of the best scenes in television history. Meredith finally confesses her love to Derek in this epic monologue and he STILL. CHOSE. ADDISON.

The exam room

The exam room scene in the season 2 finale. There are no words to describe it.

Derek pulls Meredith out of the water

After she drowns, Derek pulls Meredith out of the water and tries to save her. It was heroic and beautiful and had me in a puddle of tears.

“You broke her"

I thought this was such a great moment for Derek. After Meredith drowns and almost dies, he yells at Ellis for the way she treated Meredith when she was a child. It was so sad but so brave of him to say.

McDreamy and McSteamy- Battle Royale

Who could forget when Derek and Mark Sloan got in a fight in the middle of the hallway?

The house of candles

Meredith makes a house of candles to outline what their future house is going to look like. It's a wonderful and sweet moment that proves that she wants to fight to keep Derek, despite being scared of being with him long term

Derek mourns his patient

This moment came in season 5. Derek lost an important patient and he has a mental breakdown. I love this moment because honestly I think it's some of the best acting Patrick Dempsey has ever done. It shows just how much Derek truly cares about each and every one of his patients

Elevator proposal

THIS PROPOSAL WAS PERFECT. It showed just how much they truly care about each other and it was so different from all other television marriage proposals

Post-It note wedding

They got married from a Post-It note. And it remained relevant throughout the rest of the seasons. And it was PERFECT. Enough said.

Derek and the spinal tumor

This is one of my all time favorite episodes. Derek has to operate on an inoperable spinal tumor that also happens to belong to one of the hospital's lab techs. I thought it was a brilliant episode that showcased Derek as a brilliant surgeon.

Derek gets shot

Who could forget season 6 episodes 23 and 24. They were some of the most intense and emotional episodes of any television show ever. I definitely thought Derek was going to die. Luckily, he didn't (yet).

Meredith and Derek reunite with Zola

This was such a sweet moment for Meredith and Derek. Their little family was finally back together despite all the ups and downs.

Meredith is pregnant!!

This is a moment from season 9. Meredith tells Derek that they are going have another baby by telling him to open a bag. In the bag is a t shirt that says “I'm going to be a big sister!" It's such a sweet moment for the two of them, even though Meredith is worried that something bad is going to happen because “terrible things are constantly happening to us"

Derek Bailey Shepherd

The birth of baby Bailey in the middle of a superstorm in the season 9 finale is a moment I will never forget. Plus, the baby who portrayed him was PRECIOUS.

And finally, his famous catch phrase

Rest in peace, Derek. You will be missed.
