Human rights is hard to define. Asking people on the streets won't get you an answer most of the time, and even professors go with the textbook definition. So is it really a shock that most people actually don't know their rights? Knowing your human rights is important. It makes you aware of what you’re entitled to as a human being, but it also holds the person accountable for knowing when their rights are being violated. Lucky for you, I made a nice little “cheat sheet” of your 30 basic rights as a human being walking the Earth:
- Everyone is born free and equal – Free to think your own thoughts and ideas, and treated in the same way as every other person on Earth
- You can’t be discriminated against for any reason at all – We’re all different, but that can't be held against you
- A right to life, liberty, and security – Nobody gets to choose, (technically) whether you should live or not. You have every right to be here and live in safety.
- You can't hold people as your slaves (or sell them) – This one’s obvious right?
- You can't torture people inhumanly – Also obvious I hope
- Right to recognition – No matter where on Earth you are, they must treat you like the human you are and nothing less.
- Equal protection of the law – The law is the same for everybody and must treat us fairly
- Human rights are protected by the law – We can ask for the law (court) to help us when we are in need or not being treated fairly
- You can't be subject to arbitrary arrest, detention, or exile – You can't go to jail unless they have a valid reason to put you there
- Right to trial – Fair and public
- Innocent until proven guilty – You know this from all those cop shows you watch
- Right to privacy – Nobody can hack your phone or tarnish your name
- You can leave – Move to Antarctica if you want! Nobody can stop you
- Right to a safe place to live – That’s pretty self-explanatory
- Right to nationality – You can belong to any country
- Right to marry – Whoever, whatever, and whenever
- Right to own things – That lipstick? Yup it's your right
- Freedom of thought – You know this one...
- Freedom of expression – Goes along nicely with thought
- Right to public assembly – You can meet your friends wherever your little heart desires
- Right to democracy – Anyone can run this country if they really want to
- Social security – Right to affordable housing, medicine, education, and enough money to live
- Workers rights – Right to work a job and a fair wage in return
- Right to play – Go ahead and play in the field of sunflowers!
- Food and shelter for all – A right to have a good life with people that will take care of you
- Right to an education – Primary school should be free and the right to attend any type of education you (or your parents) choose
- Copyright – No one can take your creativity and art without permission
- A fair and free world – This is somewhat up to the government I suppose...
- Responsibility – We have a duty to be kind to everyone and make sure their rights are being recognized just as much as yours
- No one can take these away.
