The world animation got turned out its head when the cult sensation Rick and Morty appeared on Adult Swim back in 2013. Today anytime you walk into Hot Topic or Spencers you see their faces plastered on shirts, socks, and even... tighty whities.
But why?
Rick and Morty on the surface is a wonderful comedy show that you can sit down and enjoy with some friends, but it's also a rabbit hole where you will lose your sanity trying to figure out the hidden meanings and symbols to different characters and events that happen.
My prime example: Evil Morty.
So disclaimer for anyone who has not seen the show, I suggest you watch get caught up, and then dive into the fan theories but it is so much more enjoyable to watch the show for yourself and see what you can up with!
But for those of us who have seen it! I know I personally have been watching the Film Theorist to see what they can piece together, and I have poured over episodes countless of times looking at the most mundane things like the junk left in the garage, the way Rick acts, even open title sequence I have watched countless of times to gather some hidden clue that will piece everything together.
But these are just the theories in Rick and Morty, besides them, there is so much jammed packed into this show that it makes you take a step back and just question things.
In season three there is an episode arc where Beth is given the chance to get cloned and be free from her life, asking the question, "what about if you were given the chance?"
Rick and Morty has philosophical questions sprinkled throughout that keep you engaged in the show. You can see how different characters, who all have VERY different personalities respond to this type of option. This show allows you to see just how complicated the mind is, and makes you ask questions about yourself.
But, it's also a show where the creators try to make the most phallic looking characters imaginable, so I mean, take any in-depth analysis (... like this one, I guess) with a very large grain of salt.
