Normally, I hate being asked about my favorite movie, song, or band because it's not easy for me to just pick one. I love too many things. I go through an ebb and flow of emotions and my taste in music or movies changes with it. But whenever I am asked my favorite book, I know it. Maybe it will change in the future when I outgrow my love for young adult novels, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon. For now, my favorite book? "Dangerous Angels: The Weetzie Bat Books" by Francesca Lia Block.
"Weetzie Bat" is the debut novel of Francesca Lia Block's series "Dangerous Angels," set in an urban fairytale Los Angeles you will learn to love and hate. In "Weetzie Bat," you will be immersed in the quirky and magical world of Weetzie Bat. Her best friend, Dirk, is gay. Her significant other, My Secret Agent Lover Man, was granted on a wish. Her daughter Cherokee's creation is a mystery. And you will be left wondering what will happen next at the end of every chapter.
Weetzie lives in a complex universe that breaks social norms and expectations. The story follows Weetzie and Dirk after they are granted three wishes by a peculiar genie, but it is not a typical happy-ending story. Weetzie must endure the consequences of her wishes and despite the magical nature of the world, her demons are very real. You will experience all of the pain and happiness Weetzie feels as she zigzags down the path to becoming an adult.
You will meet Grandma Fifi and wish she was your grandmother too. You will meet Slinkster Dog and his girlfriend Go Go Girl. You will go duck hunting and learn about buff ducks, skinny ducks, and rasta ducks. You will meet Witch Baby. And you will learn that love is a dangerous angel.
So why is such a weird story my favorite book? I admire the universe Francesca Lia Block created for Weetzie because it breaks social expectations. There is witchcraft, Jayne Mansfield, homosexuality, Native American culture, voodoo, duck hunting, quirky names, and so much more.
If you're a reader who likes a novel that challenges the familiar while creatively adding pop culture references and twisting the norms, then "The Weetzie Bat Books" are for you.
