FINALLY!! A DC Comic movie that wasn’t too bad. As a person who prefers DC versus Marvel, Marvel makes better movies, but DC is taking some good steps towards competing with Marvel on a live action movie base. Suicide Squad in a nutshell tells the tale of villains in the DC world that are being used by the United States government for positive purposes. Between casting and characters, storyline and a possible sequel there’s a lot to discuss.
1. Casting and Characters (Just Some Main Characters)
Will Smith- Deadshot
A father to a young girl by dad and an assassin who “never misses” a target by night, Will Smith seemed like the perfect actor to choose for Deadshot. Deadshot is known for being laid back and having the “I don’t give a f*ck” attitude, Will Smith perfectly portrayed this in the movie, Hancock, where he starred as a washed up and poor excuse for a superhero who ends up doing the right thing. (Sorry if you haven’t seen Hancock yet) Well, Smith brings that attitude over to Suicide Squad and pulled off the role of Deadshot perfectly.
Margot Robbie- Harley Quinn
Ah yes, Margot Robbie, a very attractive and now well known actress after appearing alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the film, The Wolf of Wall Street. Now, she suits up as the Joker’s right hand woman in Suicide Squad. Harley Quinn is meant to be in love with the Joker, but he is not to feel the same way back. Margot Robbie has proven to be able to handle herself in a lead role where she sticks out like a sore thumb. In a movie where it will be more men than women in the theater and she is dressed in a similar way in the comics other than the famous black and red outfit, it is no surprise that the casting folks wanted to show off as much of Margot Robbie as possible. Harley Quinn is supposed to be quirky and crazy and I think Robbie pulled it off.
Jared Leto- The Joker
Okay, can we be real for a second here? Who did this?! I do not understand this rendition of The Joker. What is with the tattoos, grill on his teeth and looking like a pimp? I thought this was The Joker not a Joke. I understand that the director tells the story behind The Joker killing Robin so Batman smashes his teeth in, but a grill? Really? He couldn’t have gotten weird dentures that aren’t shiny? He later wears a collared jacket that makes him look like a pimp and this is not The Joker we all know and love. Jared Leto did what he could with what he was given. However, if Leto did any sort of research on the character that is The Joker he would look at this and go, “What the literally heck?” I don’t know how much control Leto had over the character before he officially signed on, but this was not a good portrayal.
Cara Delevingne- Enchantress
This one was tricky. I have only seen Cara Delevingne in a segment from The Late Late Show with James Corden. That’s how familiar I am with her. When it comes to the character of Enchantress, she is supposed to be dark and evil and that’s what Cara brings to the table. Enchantress is a witch who possesses the closest human to her and in this case, June Moone, an archaeologist (even though she's actually a freelance artist). This picture doesn’t do her justice, but she essentially gains life and becomes “beautiful” (as shown below).
I’m not saying Cara Delevingne isn’t beautiful, I’m just saying that in the comic book world this is what women are portrayed to look like. Delevingne did a good job performing as the evil witch, however I didn’t feel her commanding the screen.
Joel Kinnaman- Colonel Rick Flag
Just looking at Kinnaman's resume on IMDB this seems to be his type of role. The macho military guy who leads the way when stuff blows up. He is in love with the June Moone, but looks past the fact that she can transform into an evil witch. Now that is a real relationship. Rick Flag is virtually the same character on screen and in the comics. Great portrayal here and great job by casting.
Viola Davis- Amanda Waller
Ah yes, Amanda Waller, the brains behind this. She originally calls them Task Force X before she actually assembles the Suicide Squad. Viola Davis was perfect for this casting. A strong female (Regular Human) lead. She is meant to be an unrelenting, high powered government official who takes a big leap in starting the Suicide Squad. Great job Viola Davis because you nailed it.
2. Storyline
The idea of using villains for good use while under the control of the government is a great idea. The movie follows the comics pretty well, but there are just a few things that come to mind. First is the idea that a bomb can take down Incubus who has mystic powers and super durability.I get it that it may be a very powerful bomb incorporated with Diablo’s fire power, but that must be one heck of a bomb. Second, if you actually believed that The Joker died in the helicopter explosion and were surprised when he came back at the end I don’t think you have seen enough movies. He’s too important to kill off so why believe that he was dead. Third, The Joker does NOT love Harley Quinn. He doesn’t hate her, but he keeps her around because she is the best sidekick a villain could hope for. Their relationship is not #Relationshipgoals, sorry folks. Next, they didn’t do a great job of surprising the audience with Slipknot’s death. You don’t really get to know him so if he dies it’s just kind of whatever at this point. Furthermore, Killer Croc says virtually nothing throughout this movie. I understand that it may be tough graphics wise to do it, but getting him more involved would have been great. Finally, Katana’s sword does not keep souls in it. I don’t know where they got that idea from, but that is not an actual thing. That's just a few things I had some issues with, but overall, it flowed well, there was pretty good action and was just about two hours long so not too long.
3. I’m Thinking Sequel
With the ending of Suicide Squad ending with The Joker busting Harley Quinn out of prison this will obviously lead to a sequel. We’re all wondering what The Joker’s role will be in the next movie because he does not play as big of a role in Suicide Squad as everyone thought. What purpose will the sequel serve assuming there is one? Personally, I think it’ll be a rescue mission to get Harley Quinn back, but who knows what else this may entail. There is a bit of mystery, but I like that.
Overall, I liked the movie, but I have my gripes. If this were just a film not based on a comic book series, I would like this film a lot more. However, since you have something to go off of try using that for once. Obviously, you can't get everything from comic book to film, but there are big things that you should include. Would I see this movie again? Yes. Would I run to the theater to see it? .... Not so much.... Step it up DC because Marvel is still ahead.
