A Review Of 'The Life Of Pablo'

Kanye has been making headlines, as per usual, lately. His album "The Life of Pablo" was highly anticipated and had several "leaks" and rumored release dates, until he official released it on his new music streaming platform: "Tidal." The album has now obtained reviews from horrible to incredible and everything in between. So without further adieu, here is my review of "The Life of Pablo." Disclaimer: I did not change the lyrics of the songs when quoting and some do contain sensitive language. I did my best to censor them respectfully and the views expressed within the lyrics do not express my own personal views.

1. "Ultralight Beam"

The lead song of the album opens with a recording of a young girl, Natalie Green, exclaiming in a preacher-esque way. As the beat begins to come in, the song certainly encompasses the style that is expected of Kanye. The song continues to feature Chance the Rapper, who wraps an incredible verse. The overall message of the song certainly sets a religious context that is echoed consistently. That being said, I really think that Chance made this song what it is, and I thought it was a great way to start the album and keep us listening.

Best Lyrics: "You can feel the lyrics, the spirit coming in braille, Tubman of the underground, come and follow the trail."

Rank (out of all tracks on album): 4 of 18

2. "Father Stretch My Hands Pt.1"

The second song of the track definitely ups the tempo from the slower paced first track. The beat includes a great mix of high-hat and heavy bass. This track features Kid Cudi, and utilizes auto tune throughout. The overall sound of the song echoes the tone Kanye put into his former album "808's and Heartbreaks." Overall, this is a solid intro to pt. 2 and also works well as an individual track.

Best Lyrics: "You want just what we want, I want to wake up with you in my eyes."

Rank 13 of 18

3. "Pt. 2"

Pt 2. gives a heavy feel right off the beginning. The beat creates a type of mixed trap background. I can't count the amount of time both myself and everyone I talked about the album with states "The track with Future is pretty good". But beware, the rapper featured throughout this track is actually little-known artist "Desiigner." Almost everyone has commented on the similarity between Future and the featured rapper, and have mixed feelings. I personally think that Desiigner is a more coherent and more talented artist than Future, but either would have contributed equally to this track.

Best Lyrics: "Going out like I'm Montana, Hundred killers, hundred hammers."

Rank 5 of 18

4. "Famous"

Featuring Rhianna and Swizz Beatz, the fourth track serves as a definite powerhouse of the album. This song reminds of us the good old days when Kanye was putting out songs off his records like "Graduation" and "The College Dropout." In my opinion, that was the best Kanye was, and it was awesome to hear him going back to the type of stuff I loved him for. Oh yeah, and if you haven't heard yet Kanye absolutely calls out Taylor Swift without any boundaries. This song is soon to be one of the most popular from the album and caused me a bit of trouble in debating its best lyrics.

Best Lyrics:"For all my south side n***** that know me best, I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b**** famous."

Rank 3 of 18

5. "Feedback"

Feedback has an interesting musical accompaniment which echoes the audio meaning of feedback. This is the first song that does not include a feature on the album. Kanye takes an aggressive tone and asserts his position within the music industry. He speaks about himself in the song and definitely gets his meaning across. He also uses a small part of this song to address the Black Lives Matter movement, in lyrics that state "Hands up, we just doing what the cops taught us."

Best Lyrics:"Ayy y'all heard about the good news? Y'all sleeping on me, huh? Had a good snooze? Wake up n**** wake up, We 'bout to get this paper."

Rank 14 of 18

6. "Low Lights"

Low lights serves as a precursor for Highlights, the next song on the album. This song, however, is mostly just an uncredited vocal performer preaching and talking. Kanye addressed why he included the track on the album on Twitter, and said he was "just thinking about all the moms driving they kids to school then going to work..." No matter how you feel about the track, it was definitely one of Kanye's artistic moves, which have become expected of him and his work. This song also adds to the religious characteristics of the album.

Best Lyrics: N/A

Rank 16 of 18

7. "Highlights"

Highlights serves as a track in which Kanye comments on some of his accomplishments as well as those of his family. Kanye also talks about how his family is now famous and successful. He also shows his hopes for the future in a general sense. The most memorable lyrics of the song, however, comment on the past relationship and, putting it mildly, "media" artist Ray-J participated in with Kanye's now wife, Kim Kardashian. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this song and think it is one of the most memorable on the album, even after the first time listening.

Best Lyrics:"She spent her whole check on some Christians, and that girl ain't even religious."

Rank 2 of 18

8. "Freestyle 4"

This track perhaps has the heaviest feel of the entire album. Kanye begins his verse by alluding to how he can tear down every other rapper, but goes on to mostly just make sexual references for the rest of the song. The beat is good and the song sounds heavy so I guess it kind of achieves its purpose? Either way not a great song but not a bad one. Also Desiigner is briefly featured at the end.

Best Lyris:"You moth********** living like half of your level, half of your life."

Rank 15 of 18

9. "I Love Kanye"

Just when you thought Kanye couldn't get more Kanye... an acapella freestyle about Kanye. There's not really all that much else to say... Kanye.

Best Lyrics:"And I love you like Kanye loves Kanye."

Rank 17 of 18

10. "Waves"

For a while, we all thought that waves would not only be a track on Kanye's album, but the title track. The song features Chris Brown and has an extremely catchy beat. The song is loud and memorable and Kanye sounds like the Kanye we've all heard on the track. Chris Brown, despite being a horrible person, sings the chorus really well and definitely adds to the song. The track establishes the symbolism of a wave as something that crashes but never dies. A cool concept if you ask me.

Best Lyrics:"Waves don't die, Let me crash here for the moment, I don't need to own it, no lie."

Rank 8 of 18

11. "FML"

An anagram for "F*** my life" this song focuses on just that. In this song we hear an almost vulnerable Kanye, something that is definitely rare. The Weeknd is featured on this song, and kills it as per usual (but seriously fix your hair dude, I don't care if its your thing, it's not a good look). The song is the type of song you can sit around and listen to when you're just hanging out, and it perhaps shows Kanye acknowledging he can f*** up for the first time in history. I personally enjoyed Kanye opening up a little bit more and thing the track was executed very well.

Best Lyrics:"I been feeling all I've given, For my children, I will die for those I love."

Rank: 7 of 18

12. "Real Friends"

One of the two tracks that were leaked before the album initially dropped, "Real Friends" is easily one of the best on the album. The song shows Kanye being reflective once again and really echoes his old style and feel. As far as style this song really reminds me of the old school Kanye, who I am way more fond of and excited to see reappearing. The song has, excuse me for this but, an absolutely fire beat. It is a wonderfully made song and even gets the audience reflecting on themselves. I think Kanye nailed this one.

Best Lyrics:"To real friends, 'til the reel end, 'Til the wheels fall off, 'til the wheels don't spin, to 3 a.m. calling', How many real friends?"

Rank: 6 of 18

13. "Wolves"

This song definitely takes a few listens to warm up to. I wasn't a fan at first, but it definitely has grown on me. The slower and darker feel definitely allows Kanye to be clear and audible the whole song. However, the comparison of himself and Kim to Joseph and Mary is by far one of the most insane uses of symbolism Kanye, or anyone, has ever used. If you can get past that, then this song is definitely quality. For me this song falls somewhere in the middle of the pack, but I could see me liking it more the more times I hear it. Side note, Frank Ocean proves he still exists by giving the outro to the song. I don't know about you, but I can't wait for his album.

Best Lyrics:"You tried to play nice, everybody just took advantage. You left your fridge open, somebody just took a sandwich" (@Ray-J)

Rank 10 of 18

14. "Siiiiiiiiilver Surffffeeeeer Intermission"

This song is literally a recording of a voicemail for Kanye. Don't really know who to review that. Classic Kanye artistry?

Best Lyrics: N/A

Rank 18 of 18

15. "30 hours"

30 hours has a pretty simple beat and allows us to enjoy the lyrics. Although I think the chorus is a little bland, I think this track as a whole is more than solid. Kanye has some great lines in this song and it definitely is memorable despite being one of the less talked about songs on the album so far.

Best Lyrics: "My ex says she gave me the best years of her life. I saw a recent picture of her, I guess she was right."

Rank 11 of 18

16. "No More Parties in LA"

The other leaked song of the album was the popular "No More Parties in LA" featuring the one and only, Kendrick Lamar. Kanye and Kendrick have to be one of the best duos imaginable. Having said that, this song doesn't disappoint. A great and catchy feel, an infinite number of great lyrics, and just an overall great feel. I almost wish it hadn't been leaked so I could've heard it for the first time along with the rest of the album.

Best Lyrics: Kendrick's verse (Honorable Mention: Kanye's Verse)

Rank 1 of 18

17. "Facts (Charlie Heat Version)"

This song is full-throttle Yeezy. I mean literally a good 5 percent of the lyrics is the word Yeezy. This song takes the form and rhythm of Drake's big hit "Jumpman". The song is not meant as stab at Drake, but rather at Nike who had endorsement issues with Kanye. Kanye also takes some other jabs in this song and shows us why he deserves the respect as an artist that most people give him despite whatever they may feel about his personal character or decisions.

Best Lyrics: "I stuck to my roots, I'm like Jimmy Fallon, I ain't dropped the album but the shoes went platinum (Woo!)"

Rank: 9 of 18

18. "Fade"

Ty Dolla $ign and Post Malone are featured on the last song of the album. The song is different from all others on the album in that it has a deep 808 bass rhythm. This rhythm is definitely interesting and different from the rest of the album. The song is pretty interesting and I think people should listen to it just to see how they feel about it. Overall, I'm a fan of it.

Best Lyrics:"I love to, I wanna, I'm tryna, I feel it."

Rank: 12 of 18

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
