Why Reverse Racism Isn't Real

Racism is a real problem, but reverse racism is not.

Why Reverse Racism Isn't Real

Racism is a subject that seems to come up fairly often lately, and with it, there are some white people claiming that "reverse racism" is just as much of a problem. However, the idea of reverse racism completely contradicts what racism means.

Racism comes from more than just prejudice. It also comes from privilege and power. In our society, people who are not white do not have near as much privilege in society. Reverse Racism would imply that people of color have suddenly gained the privilege that white people have had since the beginning of the United States.

White people make more money than other races, white men make more than black men and white women make more than black women. Anyone who is white is far less likely to be racially profiled than anyone else. Keep in mind these are generalizations, but they have statistics to back them up.

This is also where people have to keep in mind that prejudice and racism are not the same thing. Anyone can have stereotypes and prejudices, but they don’t affect white people in the same way. In fact, it barely affects them as a whole. However, stereotypes about other races can make a huge impact in jobs, schooling, and just walking down the street.

White people have privilege that favors them over anyone else, and it makes sense that people try to rectify this.

This is where people start bring up things like affirmative action because people have tried to rectify the racism of the past so people won’t have to suffer from it in the future. They’re trying to even the playing field a bit more and give people of color a chance in the world that they might not always have just because of something as simple skin color. This can be mistaken for white people losing their jobs to people of color when actually people of color are now getting a fair chance.

They’re not taking positions from white people, they’re getting the chances that they already should have had.

It’s the same when people complain about making spaces for people of color, like a Black Student Union when there is no White Student Union. Instead, places that are specifically for a certain race are meant to be safe spaces where they can discuss issues that specifically affect them. They aren’t pushing people out of a space but instead creating a space where they can be themselves and have sensitive conversations.

People aren't trying to push people away, they're trying to draw people together. That's not racism, it's unity.

There is more reasons than this, but that does not change the fact that reverse racism isn't real. Racism is an issue, reverse racism is not.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
