Resolutions. You make them every year and vow that every single one will be accomplished. The new year holds so much promise and opportunity. A clean slate. A fresh start. A different set of 365 days. You don't want to waste it right? You hear it every year and it's one of my favorite sayings simply for the comedic appeal: "New Year, New Me." But, what if that was actually a thing? I don't mean the resolutions like, "losing 10 pounds for sure this year, new me;" "Not spending(as much) money on fast food this year, new me;" "Eating quinoa like it's going out of style and drinking straight water, new me;"
Don't get me wrong, being healthy is the right move, but the way you look in a mirror should not be shaping your yearly goals. What if this year we made resolutions about us, and who we are, and the marks we leave, and the lives we lead? What if we made resolutions that truly made "New Year, New Me" happen the way that fetch never did? So I did the thinking for you. Let's do it together. Here goes nothing, new year.
1. Be Intentional
This one's coming in hot at number one. A friend of mine chose intentional as her word of the year for 2016 and that really stuck with me. What would it look like to lead a life that is intentional. To live every single day deliberately. Every dreary Monday and every weekend as if that is the last one you will ever have. What if you filled every relationship with an intentional attitude. What if you treated every interaction as if there is purpose behind that person holding the door, or that cashier, or that classmate, or colleague. What if you poured everything you had into everything you did and everyone you knew? How would December 31st, 2017 look then?
2. Stand up for your people
This one's big and it follows up closely with number one. I love the idea of a friend or loved one that's unwavering, fiercely loyal and your biggest cheerleader. So how about we be that for others this year. Why don't we be the friend that makes others want to try harder, do better, send that encouraging text, call just to check in and be their best selves. Let's make 2017 the year that we stand up for our people. Don't be wishy-washy be there and be there for real, for the long haul and for the sake of being there. Even when it doesn't feel like you're making a difference and even when you feel that others aren't standing up the same do it anyway... and eventually, hopefully, they will too.
3. Stand up for yourself.
For some, this will be more of a challenge then number two. I'll admit it sounds easier than it sometimes is. But this year let's take on the challenge of standing up for ourselves. Wow, what an idea, a year of fighting for you, and who you are, and what you stand for. A year of raising the bar of what you allow and requiring others to measure up. A year of applying that same standard of measurement to how you treat yourself. A year where you can say that you realized all that you deserved and accepted nothing short of it. Sounds scary, doesn't it? But also so intoxicating.
4. Live with a spirit of gratefulness.
This should apply to every year. It's amazing what a spirit of gratefulness and an attitude of thankfulness can do in any and every circumstance. This year open your eyes to all that you do have. Embrace all that God has given you. Don't dwell on what you think you're lacking but revel in what you possess. Take time to reflect on the beautiful thing that is your life, and then make a conscious effort to celebrate it every day.
5. Let it go.
The ultimate challenge! This year let's learn to let it go. Let go of the negativity. Let go of the mistakes. Try and fail and let it go and try again. Release anything that doesn't make you better. Give yourself some grace. A year is full of mistakes and sometimes regrets, but don't let those mistakes and regrets fill you. Let it go and learn from them. Then get out there and kill it. Give yourself the peace that you deserve and just chill. Let it roll off your back. Trust in the big man upstairs. Remember that nothing meant for you will ever pass you by and let go, like for real.
6. Live a life worthy of your calling.
This is the year. The year where you fail and succeed. The year where you walk in kindness and humility. The year where you lean in. The year you believe in yourself, I mean like really believe. The year where you learn to make all criticism constructive criticism. The year where you seek after your purpose like never before and use every day to get a little closer to that end goal. The year where you take nothing for granted and you live, love, laugh like you are on a mission. This is the year that you measure up to all you were created to be.
So let's do it. Fearlessly and joyously. Let's make this new year full of resolutions that shape all the years to come. Here's to all that we will be in 2017.
