It has baffled me for years as to why the GOP refuses to accept that climate change is real and caused by humans. The consensus within the scientific community is clear, and yet, when asked questions about climate change, Republican either flat out deny reality or give weird non-answers. By why? Well, after doing a bit of research, it turns out there are several reasons as to why.
1. Ideology
Republicans believe the government should play a smaller role in people's lives. This includes business. They think deregulation is the best way to go. Admitting that the fossil fuel industry is slowly destroying our planet would mean having to pass regulations on it which would go against their beliefs. But still, this seems like a petty ideological fight. And you're right. There's a lot more to the story than that.
2. The Koch Brothers
These two billionaires have donated millions to the Republicans in order to pressure them into deregulating the fossil fuel industry, which is where they make their money from. Them and other rich people like them make it hard for good Republicans who believe in science to get elected since they don't have the same kind of cash that climate change deniers can get.
3. The American People Don't Care About It
Politicians have no reason to change their position on something if their constituents do not. The truth is that a lack of education has caused Americans to be less scared of climate change than they should. We just elected Donald Trump, a man who claims that climate change is a hoax made up by the Chinese, as our President after all. Unless we take a stand on climate change, we can not expect that politicians will.
Hopefully, we can get it together before the polar ice caps are completely melted.
