Since June 15th, 2015, one Republican has dominated the media and public eye. This man, of course, is Donald Trump. Honestly, I thought this was a joke or vapid threat from a media-crazed real-estate mogul. Sure, Trump has the cash to back his own campaign, but who would acutely support and vote for a man who is known for being a disrespectful, arrogant, misogynistic brute? Apparently, more people that the republican party thought. I am a republican, and this is what I would like Donald Trump to know.
Dear Mr. Trump,
I am a strong supporter of the Republican party. I passionately believe in small government and the American dream through a capitalist free-market economy. I believe in the separation of church and state for all people, of all peaceful religions. After all, These are the building blocks of our great nation; and you Mr. Trump, will not protect them. In fact, you look to take them away entirely for certain Americans. Let me back up for a moment and let you know that I already thought you were not a quality human being. I am a millennial, so I grew up during 'The Apprentice' era. I remember you sitting at the end of a long wooden table, spewing hate at those around you and degrading women on almost every episode. This was a man who thought he was king, so he could, therefore, say anything he wanted to and wash his hands clean of the reproductions.
When I learned you were actually serious about running for president, I laughed. My laughter has stopped, however. It stopped when you proposed to ban Muslims from entering the United States. Maybe you forgot, but we are a nation made of Immigrants. If you were president during the Irish potato famine, would you have let my starving Catholic family into the port or sent us home to die? After all, public opinion of the Irish was not favorable. If you were president back then, I doubt either of our families would have made it off the boats. By definition Mr. Trump, you are discriminating based on religion, and thereby breaking the constitution. In the words of House Speaker Rand Paul, "This is beyond conservatism. This is not what this party stands for". Bigotry and xenophobia are not the values our brave citizens in uniform fight for. You also stayed silent when a peaceful Muslim woman was escorted from your rally. That moment as you, for once, stood quietly and watched the women being taken away by security, reminded me of a famous quote by Pastor Martin Niemoller.
There are many American people out there who want to know, would you speak out for us? Will you be a fair and just president who abides by the constitution, upholds our freedom, protects our liberty, and raises our reputation? Mr. Trump, it has been less than a year since you announced your intentions to be the next president of the United States of America, and already you have faltered repeatedly at doing all these things. Your presidency has gone from being a ridiculous joke, to being a scary possibility. If you are chosen as the republican nominee, I will not vote for you, I will simply warn everyone I can against you. You are not a republican Mr. Trump, you do not represent the morals and patriotism of my party. If you love America like you say you do Mr. Trump, you will drop out of the 2016 race for president.
Sincerely,
Abigail Donahue
