A Few Reminders In Self-Care Throughout The Semester

We all need reminders sometimes. We can often get too wrapped up in what we're doing to remember things that we should be doing. So here's a few reminders for things to do during the semester.

Eat.

And no, I don't just mean energy drinks and snack food. Eat a real meal if you can get it. Don't let yourself becoming so wrapped up in whatever it is that you're doing that you forget to have proper food. It might seem like a good idea to have keep chugging energy drinks and eating junk food, but in the long run, it will do you more harm than good.

Go to class.

Depending on who you are, it may either sound like a no-brainer or like a chore. However, no matter your feelings on it, going to class is pretty necessary to get good grades. If you don't go to class, you miss a lot. I know how hard it is to get out of bed in the morning, especially if you've got 8 a.m. classes, but I highly recommend taking the effort.

Make sure to check if you have assignments.

Yeah, I know. It sounds like another no-brainer. But I know how distracting life can be. Any time you take to hang out with your friends can keep you pretty busy. Not to mention the great (and wonderful) distraction that is Netflix. Sometimes it's hard to remember to turn off the TV or get off Facebook to check if you actually have any work to do. It happens to all of us, but it can cost you dearly. But don't forget to check! Seriously.

Sleep.

If you're so busy with your schoolwork, class and your social life, then you may feel like you don't have time to catch a few Z's. But not having enough sleep starts to get to you very quickly. Contrary to how it may seem, you actually have to sleep to get all your work done. You can't sacrifice all your sleep. You'll have to cut back in other areas, like maybe a few episodes less of your favorite show. Sleep is pretty necessary.

Take a break.

I know how busy you are. Trust me, I'm just as busy. But breaks do need to happen. And I don't necessarily mean sitting and playing video games or watching TV. Go for a walk, take a catnap, take a shower. The break doesn't have to be long, maybe five minutes or so. Just do something to refresh yourself and come back to your homework with fresh eyes. Trust me, it'll help.

College can be pretty hard on us, whether or not we enjoy it. And there's a lot of things that have to be done. Just don't forget to take care of yourself in the course of simultaneously get your homework done and have a social life. It's not always easy, but you've got to do it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
