"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." -Ferris Bueller
This quote rings true in the lives of many. Life takes turns at neck-breaking speed and we react as it goes The sheer speed and scope of life leaves little time to soak in the little moments or process the lessons learned. That’s why I propose taking moments to reflect on your life each day.
Each day, no matter how mundane, holds moments that impact our future. Without reflecting on these moments, we can miss important insights or explanations to our future selves. For example, one comment a friend makes can open the door to a whole new reality. Without remembering that moment, it is hard to pinpoint where your journey starts.
Some would argue it’s better to live in the moment, I believe an understanding of one’s self is crucial to a fulfilling life. For example, knowing your gut reactions to situations and why you draw on these schemas is good to judge how to properly react to a situation. Without self-knowledge from reflection on your past, it is hard to adequately live in the moment.
It is also important to reflect in order to check in with the person you’re evolving into each day. With each choice one makes, their character is solidified. It’s good to step back and think critically about whether or not you want to continue that course. Each day, take a moment to look at your actions and search for patterns or inconsistencies. What was different: the scenario, your mood or the people you were with? Then you can accurately gauge what environments and habits will lead to your desired future self.
Finally, in this busy era, it’s nice to be reminded of your humanity for at least a few mintues each day.
